Roster Moves
- Milton Bradley returned to the lineup today; to make room, Chin Feng Chen was DFAd.
- Jose Valentin will not get the starting 3B job back once he returns from the DL, according to Jim Tracy. Instead, he will appear in the outfield.
- The Orioles have supposedly traded Sidney Ponson to the Padres, in exchange for 1B Phil Nevin. I qualify that because Nevin has a no-trade clause that explicitly mentions the Orioles as a team he would not accept a trade to.
- The Padres optioned Sean Burroughs to AAA Portland, and acquired 3B Joe Randa from the Reds. In exchange, Cincinnati got minor leaguers Justin Germano (3.70 ERA, 7-6, 112.0 IP, 100/32 K/BB with AAA Portland) and Travis Chick (5.27 ERA, 2-9, 97.1 IP, 92/40 K/BB with AA Mobile Bay), both right-handed starters. Germano and Chick were rated by Baseball America before the season as the Padres' seventh and fourth best prospects.
- The Rockies lost starter Jason Jennings to a broken finger, for the season.
- Cards 3B Scott Rolen hit the DL with a shoulder injury inflicted during a collision with Hee Seop Choi.
- The Giants activated 3B Edgardo Alfonso from the 15-day DL.
- The Chisox have put Frank Thomas on the 15-day DL, with pain in his left ankle. You may recall that when this happened last year, it was the nail in the Chisox' coffin, and the surging Twins took off and never looked back. However, this year, Thomas hasn't been that much of a difference maker that the team will likely miss him so much.
