We Could Be Heroes
- Sacramento's Juan Cruz worked his ERA down to 1.76 in a seven-inning effort against the Stingers, who lost 5-2; Casey Kotchman's homer was the only scoring the team got against Cruz. Cruz is something like a AAAA player so far, dominating in the high minors but so far unable to find extended success in the majors. Japan?
Chris Bootcheck took the loss and four earned runs for the Stingers.
- Tulsa embarrassed the Travs 8-4. Catcher Mike Napoli got three RBIs on the night, going 1-3 with a walk.
- The Jethawks strafed the Quakes 9-2. Aaron Peel, hitting .345/.371/.534 with two home runs and five doubles in 58 AB, went 3-5 in the loss.
Stephen Smith notes that Brandon Wood's 28 home runs leads all professional baseball. (He hit his 28th in the July 2 game against Lancaster, but I counted wrong. Oops.) Stephen's got a nice summary up about how Wood's not getting cheapies, either, or benefiting overly from Cal-league inflation or suddenly seeing a string of bad pitchers.
- Cedar Rapids edged Lansing 7-6.
- Mark Trumbo (.333/.368/.593) went 2-5, both doubles, in a 7-6 loss for Orem.
- 51's: Derek Thompson gave up three earned runs in a 4-2 loss to Portland. Mike Venafro pitched a scoreless eighth in relief.
- Jacksonville: Carolina edged the Suns 8-7. Hong-Chih Kuo took the loss and a blown save, his first of the year, surrendering three earned runs in a seven-inning game (completed early due to a late doubleheader). A wild throw on a ground ball to Delmon Young with one out keyed the big inning; outfielder Jon Weber had three RBIs and went 2-4.
The first game in yesterday's doubleheader the Suns also lost, 4-1. Edwin Jackson was tagged with the loss despite only allowing one earned run in six innings of work. Todd Donovan stole four bases in the game, and now leads the minor leagues with 44. Jason Vargas, a former Dirtbag, struck out 11 for the Mudcats.
- Vero Beach lost to the St. Lucie Mets, 5-3.
- Columbus: Brandon Weeden took the loss for the Catfish, who went down 5-2 to Greensboro.
- The GCL Dodgers had the night off.
- Casper shut out the Ogden Raptors 6-3.
