We Could Be Heroes
- The Salt Lake Stingers fell to the Tucson Sidewinders 4-2. Arizona's number two prospect, Conor Jackson, went 2-4 in the effort. Brian Specht's homer off Sidewinder Bill Murphy provided half the Stingers' scoring. Kevin Lynch -- freshly promoted from rookie-A ball in Orem -- provided two innings of scoreless relief with one walk and three strikeouts.
On the fourth, Canadian Eric Cyr pitched 7.1 innings of scoreless ball in a 3-2 win over Tucson. Jeff Mathis (.280/.344/.498) and Brian Pavkovich homered, Pavkovich providing the game-winner.
- Kendry Morales had another 0-fer night at the plate as Tulsa beat the Travs 4-1. Sandy Nin got the win in a two-hit, complete game effort; his ERA is now 3.02 in 62.0 innings pitched with 38 strikeouts and 9 walks. Matt Wilhite pitched two scoreless innings in relief, and Steven Shell (5.00 ERA, 5-6) took the loss. Shell at one point retired 15 straight batters in the game.
Morales did better in his Fourth of July game, going 2-4 in a 3-0 loss to the Drillers. Enmanuel Ulloa pitched six innings for the Drillers; he has a 1.94 ERA in 41.2 IP with 9 walks and 38 strikeouts.
- Rich drops me a line to let me know that Jered Weaver pitched a two-hitter, going five innings for Rancho and garnering his first professional win. He struck out seven and walked none. Brandon Wood walked four times and tripled, going 1-1 and scoring two runs.
Update: More on this game from the San Bernardino Sun.
- Stephen Smith has a nice little report from Todd Brommelkamp, Sports Information Director for the Cedar Rapids Kernels:
Michael Collins has caught fire and is now hitting .333... Drew Toussaint is the real deal. This guy'll be in the big leagues some day and hopefully with the Angels. ... If Michel Simard isn't back in Rancho by the middle of this month I'll be amazed. He has yet to turn in a poor start for us and I think any health concerns are in the rearview mirror. He looks every bit the All-Star he was here last season. ... The Angels got a steal in Freddy Sandoval last year. He's playing like a first-rounder right now. Again, offensively, some of his numbers may not jump off the screen at you until you notice he's leading the team in RBI.
Back to the games, the Kernels creamed the Ft. Wayne Wizards 7-3. Aussie recruit catcher Michael Collins (.347/.426/.545) went 3-4 with an RBI, scoring two runs and stealing a base (!!). Drew Toussaint went 2-4 with a homer. Jesse Smith pitched a complete game on five hits and two earned runs. - Former Jayhawk League standout Stephen Marek earned a no-decision in 4.2 innings of work on three runs as the Orem Owlz fell to Casper, 5-3. Rockies' fourteenth-rounder Kyle Blumenthal (.361/.465/.500) went 2-3 and walked twice.
- The Las Vegas 51's fell to the Colorado Rockies... oh, my bad, that was another team... The 51's edged the Grizzlies 4-3. Henri Stanley homered twice (his seventh and eighth of the year), both solo shots. Joe Thurston went 2-4. Wilson Alvarez pitched a scoreless inning to start the game.
- Yesterday's contest between the Suns and the Bay Bears was postponed due to rain at a 4-4 tie in the sixth. Delwyn Young (2-3, 2 RBI) and Andy LaRoche (2-2) both had a multihit game going.
- Glenn Bott was effectively wild (5 walks, 8 strikeouts) for 4.2 innings as the Vero Beach Dodgers fell to the St. Lucie Mets, 4-3.
- The Catfish killed the Crawdads 12-6. Personal favorite (just for the name) Daniel Batz went 3-5 with four RBIs; Travis Denker went 3-3 with three RBIs and four runs scored, including a home run, his fourteenth of the year.
- Talk About Hot: Sergio Pedroza has 16 hits and three home runs in 27 at bats for a .593/.667/.926 line with the Ogden Raptors, with five walks and only three strikeouts. He's one of seven guys on the lineup hitting .333 or better, as the Raptors fell 6-5 to Idaho Falls thanks to a bad starting performance from David Pfeiffer.
Comments:
I'm not excited about giving up 2 hits over only 5 IP. I've seen the kid pitch and he's somewhat impressive... so was his brother though. Pretty much the same stuff, I think. Jared will certainly have to have better control and economize his pitches if he's going to succeed.

Damn those Young brothers! Thanks for the catch.
Andy -- no kidding. I am a tempered optimist on Weaver, but the tempering factor is the consistent reports that his delivery precludes him learning certain breaking pitches, and that he's got command and mechanics issues that, say, Mark Prior did not. He certainly can't throw the mid-hundreds of pitches he was while pitching for CSULB and survive in the major leagues.
