Clowntime Is So Not Over

Rob Neyer has a good piece ($) up about the Angels, in which he answers a question from some damn fool who writes
You can have an autographed baseball from any other first baseman in either league. I'll take Erstad's. We'll see which one is more valuable in 20 years. Betcha I win.
To which Neyer responds:
Actually, I don't have anything against Darin Erstad. I like the way he hustles, and I don't take any particular pleasure in telling the truth about him. It's been three years since my first Darin-Erstad's-contract-is-silly column, and I don't think I've written another since (don't quote me on that, though). Everything I wrote then is exactly as true now, except that today he's actually less valuable than I figured because he's not playing center field.

And yes, David, I'll take that bet. You're telling me that in 20 years, a baseball autographed by Darin Erstad will be worth more money than a baseball autographed by:

Carlos Delgado

Jeff Bagwell

Jim Thome

Albert Pujols (Albert Pujols?)

Rafael Palmeiro

Mark Teixeira

You said anybody. I'll take Pujols. Now how much did you want to bet? I'll tell you what: In 20 years, if you're right I'll buy you one of those Erstad-signed balls. If you're wrong, you'll buy me a Pujols. Do we have a wager?

And do you really want me to look at Erstad's stats? If you're going to make a case for him you've got to ignore the stats.

Elvis Costello notwithstanding, Clowntime is most decidedly not over so long as there are "intangibles" guys arguing that Darin Erstad is more valuable than Albert Pujols.

Comments:
Is that a good thing or a bad thing?

I was glad the Dodgers didn't bite on resigning Beltre, because his year reminded me too much of Erstad's.

I never understood the love affair with Erstad (and this coming from an Eckstein fan.) He's the Derek Fisher of the Angels. Just not that good.
