Dirtbag-Led Marlins 7, Dodgers 1
Following Friday's postgame Bradley/Kent blowup, I found it interesting that Kent didn't appear in Sunday's game, one they won by a huge margin. Lowe, of course, is completely baffled by his own performance:
"Too many mistakes over the middle of the plate," said Lowe (8-12), chased after only 3 2/3 innings. "The two walks scored and the hit by the pitcher, the combination equals four runs. You can't make those mistakes or it's a pretty lopsided game. It's been a roller-coaster year. If I could put my finger on it, I'd try to stop it."Stop showing up to the park loaded? Well, we don't know about that, so such suggestions are as valuable as talk of "heart and soul".
On the other side of the mound, rookie 2004 draftee and former Dirtbag Jason Vargas came up and decimated the Dodgers in a complete game, allowing only one run. Vargas improved his record to 2.45 and 4-1, but it's not like he's overwhelmed by what he's done:
"I think my part is the same as any other pitcher on the pitching staff -- go deep into games and keep the team in the ballgame," said the left-hander from Apple Valley, Calif., who tossed a career-high 117 pitches. "That's my only thought right now. I'm not here to pitch like a rookie or act like one. I'm here to help these guys get to the playoffs and win a World Series."As indeed we should expect. Vargas also got an RBI single off Lowe, helping out with the bat. Vargas, it should be noted, was Long Beach's number two in the rotation after Jered Weaver.
Tonight, Edwin Jackson appears on the mound for the Dodgers. I have to ask, though, why it is that Odalis Perez comes up with yet another ailment that conveniently causes him to miss an important start. There, I mentioned it.
