Minor League Scorebook
A couple notes before getting started:
2005-08-21: Ogden 3, Billings 5
- First, Friday's Columbus game was postponed due to poor field conditions, making two Dodger farm teams the victims of precipitation.
- Rotoworld reports Lou Merloni has joined the AZL Angels for a rehab assignment, this despite the expectation earlier in the season that he was done for the year.
- Also in Rotoworld, the Angels have optioned Greg Jones back to AAA Salt Lake.
- Randy Youngman of the Register notes that with strong starts from Ervin "Magic" Santana and lefty Joe Saunders, the Angels have some options in the rotation in the offseason. Without looking closely at the guys who will be available, and given the Yankees recent troubles in their rotation, combined with their left-handed pitching fetish needed because of their park's dimensions, and his Boras connection, Wash ends up in pinstripes unless the Angels figure Saunders is a couple years away.
- Alexi Casilla has broken his finger and is done for the season. Jose Caldera was called down from AA Arkansas to replace him. (Hat tip: FutureAngels.)
2005-08-21: Sacramento 2, Salt Lake 3
Quinlan: 2-4
Mathis, J: 2-4
Gorneault: 1-4, 1 RBI
Woods: 5.2 IP, 1 ER, 5 H, 4 K, 1 BB, 5.40 ERA
Bergman, D: (W, 8-5) (in relief), 1.0 IP, 0 ER, 0 H, 1 K, 0 BB, 3.15 ERA
Ah, how I enjoy beating the A's farm teams. It's almost as good as a win against the parent club. But I digress. Jake Woods had a great evening on the mound, one in which he faced a former teammate, Tom Gregorio. The River Cats only managed one extra-base hit against Woods, a triple. Meantime, the Stingers put together three doubles among their eleven hits. Pinch hitter Luke Allen came up with a game winning single with the bases loaded.

Duff: 2-4
Olenberger: (W, 8-7), 6.1 IP, 3 ER, 7 H, 5 K, 3 BB, 3.94 ERA
I guess we can safely say that John Danks is having a bad year, as he's getting absolutely pounded in AA, with a 5.36 ERA, 3-9 and all seven earned runs in this game. David Matranga and David Gates -- likely not of the 70's cheez-rock band, Bread -- both homered, and Gates got three walks otherwise. One of Morales' hits was a double.

WOOOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! Those dingers would be 37 and 38 on the year for Wood. Guess he's got that home run swing back now, as these are his third in four days. On the other hand, High Desert is known as a launching pad, so maybe I shouldn't get so excited.

Update 8/22: This game was Adenhart's second-highest strikeout total (tied with his 8/6 game) of the brief season. No walks, but a bunch of hits. On the other hand: no home runs, either, not a single one all season. Two errors led to five unearned runs; that's fugly.

Now that's a pasting! Jupiter used five pitchers to escape this brutality; starter James Russ, who actually had a good record coming into this game, took seven earned runs here, but the rest of the staff came off little better, with reliever Matt Overman coughing up another six earned runs. Ironically, the Hammerheads' final reliever -- Ryan Schade -- has a last name that means "pity" in German. Danny Muegge got the win despite surrendering five runs, all earned. For the Dodgers, the big offensive story was Edwin Bellorin, who got only his third home run all year, but he made it count with the bases loaded. His slam was immediately followed by another by Cory Dunlap. Bellorin's seven RBI tied the most in a single game by a Vero Beach Dodger this season.

The mid-day game lasted 3:30, with a heat index well into the 100 degree range. Ouch.
