Minor League Scorebook
Callaspo, A: 1-4
McPherson: 1-4, 1 HR, 2 RBI
Gorneault: 1-3
Mathis: 2-4
Pride: 2-4
Cyr: (L, 4-5), 6.1 IP, 5 ER, 13 H, 4 K, 2 BB, 5.77 ERA
Bergman, D: 1.0 IP, 2 ER, 3 H, 0 K, 0 BB, 3.05 ERA
A four-game sweep by Nashville, Eric Cyr tasted the bat of Brewers superprospect Prince Fielder, hitting .278/.375/.544 going into today's game, and going 4-4 (all singles) with a walk. McPherson's homer was a two-run shot, but he also committed a (harmless) throwing error and struck out twice.
Willits, R: 2-4
Kendrick, H: 2-3, 2 RBI
Morales, K: 0-4
Davidson: (W, 12-5), 7.0 IP, 2 ER, 6 H, 5 K, 1 BB, 4.03 ERA
Howie Kendrick extended his hitting streak to 11 games with a two-run single in the fifth to spot Arkansas to a 3-2 lead they would not relinquish. Erick Aybar hit his seventh home run of the year. Daniel Davidson, now 12-5, leads the Texas League in wins.
Tomorrow's start by Jered Weaver will be opposed by Ron Mahay, who cleared waivers yesterday and was sent to AA Frisco. How bad is that, opposite AAA?
Wood, B: 2-4
Pali: 2-5, 3 RBI
Brown: 2-4, 1 HR, 4 RBI
Balkcom: 2-5
Holcomb: (W, 8-6), 7.0 IP, 2 ER, 5 H, 5 K, 1 BB, 5.45 ERA
Despite the high score, Rancho only had three extra-base hits, a three-run homer and a double by Matthew Brown, and a double by Matthew Pali.
Toussaint: 0-4
Leblanc: 1-2, 2 BB
Rodriguez, S: 1-3, 1 HR, 3 RBI
Green: (W, 2-2), 7.0 IP, 0 ER, 1 H, 7 K, 2 BB, 3.48 ERA
Simard: 1.1 IP, 0 ER, 0 H, 2 K, 0 BB, 5.79 ERA
Great night at the plate for Michael Collins, who batted second, but an equally impressive night for Nick Green, who's having a good season ERA-wise, though not necessarily strikeout-wise (5.64 K/9), though he is managing to avoid walks (41/11 K/BB). The game was called in the eighth.
Phillips: 2-5, 1 RBI
Quinlan: 1-2, 1 RBI
Rivera: 3-4
Adenhart: (W, 1-1), 5.0 IP, 0 ER, 2 H, 7 K, 0 BB, 4.82 ERA
Update 8/12: It was a good night for Angels system pitchers last night, it seems. In the same way I had to give up some love for Owlz pitcher Stephen Marek (see below), I also have to say good things about Nick Adenhart, whose starts have been pretty rough as you can tell by his 4.82 ERA. But this shutout was just plain brilliant, a two-hitter through five with seven K's, and his longest outing to date.
Morris: 1-4, 1 HR, 1 RBI
Trumbo: 1-4, 1 RBI
Dini: 2-4, 1 RBI
Smith: 3-4, 2 RBI
Marek: (W, 1-2), 6.0 IP, 0 ER, 1 H, 12 K, 0 BB, 3.92 ERA
Hill: 2.0 IP, 0 ER, 3 H, 2 K, 0 BB, 4.78 ERA
Stephen Marek
Update 8/12: MILB.com has an article up about Marek's exploit, which earned him "MILB Star of the Day". This marks the 40th-round draft-and-follow's first professional win, and his longest game so far. Marek signed for a round-record $800,000, and the converted reliever showed why for the first time tonight.
2005-08-11: West Tenn 2, Jacksonville 5
Abreu, T: 1-4, 1 RBI
Guzman, J: 0-3
Meadows: 1-2, 2 BB
Martin, R: 0-0
Loney: 1-2
Juarez: 0.0 IP, 0 ER, 4.44 ERA
Alvarez, C: (W, 3-0) (in relief), 3.0 IP, 2 ER, 4 H, 3 K, 1 BB, 4.56 ERA
Hull: 2.0 IP, 0 ER, 1 H, 2 K, 0 BB, 3.42 ERA
William Juarez started this game but a 98 minute rain delay knocked him out, and Beltran Perez made an emergency start instead. Perez has given up only two earned runs in sixteen and a third innings since being promoted to AA Jacksonville. Eight Suns got hits, but no Sun got more than one.
Dunlap: 2-5
Denker, T: 0-4
Ellis: 2-4
Paul: 2-4
Pimentel: (L, 8-7), 5.1 IP, 5 ER, 9 H, 4 K, 1 BB, 4.00 ERA
This embarrassing game came against Cubs' pitcher Randy Wells, a converted catcher who started pitching this year. With more strikeouts (79) than innings pitched (75.1) at Daytona, he keeps the ball in the park (5 HR) and doesn't walk many (17 BB). He still gives up a bunch of hits, but it's not horrible (81). He even made the Florida State League All-Star team. Translated, he's well on his way to becoming a real prospect.
Update 8/12: Al Yellon informs me he's old for his league at 23. Maybe not such a great deal, considering he's already spent two and a half years in the minors. And yeah, the not-being-lefthanded thing works against him, too.
Dewitt: 1-4, 1 RBI
Westervelt: 1-2, 2 BB
Pedroza: 1-4, 1 HR, 2 RBI
Carter, R: 2-4
Laurin: 0-2, 2 BB
Johnson, B: 4.0 IP, 3 ER, 4 H, 1 K, 2 BB, 3.24 ERA
Wright: (L, 1-5) (in relief), 2.0 IP, 0 ER, 1 H, 1 K, 3 BB, 1.93 ERA
Wilson: 2.0 IP, 0 ER, 1 H, 2 K, 0 BB, 4.50 ERA
Medero-Stullz: 2-3, 1 RBI
Garrison: 2.0 IP, 0 ER, 3 H, 3 K, 0 BB, 0.00 ERA
Sanfler: (W, 3-3) (in relief), 3.2 IP, 0 ER, 2 H, 2 K, 2 BB, 3.58 ERA
A tag-team effort in which the Dodgers six-hit the Marlins, with only two walks. This was Kale Garrison's second appearance.
Locke: 1-4, 1 HR, 1 RBI
Alvarez: 3.2 IP, 3 ER, 5 H, 4 K, 2 BB, 6.38 ERA
Hochgesang: (L, 1-2) (in relief), 1.1 IP, 3 ER, 0 H, 3 K, 3 BB, 4.25 ERA
Pratt: 1.2 IP, 0 ER, 1 H, 2 K, 3 BB, 3.25 ERA
