Minor League Scorebook
Before I get started, a couple notes from today's Baseball
America Prospect Hot Sheet. Players of the week (or so), dominated, it seems, by Angels prospects:
2005-08-10: AZL Angels 3, AZL Athletics 4
4. Brandon Wood (SS, Angels)Also in the "In The Team Photo" section:
8. Jered Weaver (RHP, Angels)
9. Howie Kendrick (2B, Angels)
- Angels: 1B Casey Kotchman
- Dodgers: RHP Hong-Chi Kuo; 2B Travis Denker
2005-08-10: Nashville 8, Salt Lake 3
Callaspo, A: 2-4
McPherson: 1-3, 1 HR, 1 RBI
Gorneault: 1-3
Mathis: 0-3
Thomas: (L, 5-3), 5.0 IP, 5 ER, 11 H, 4 K, 0 BB, 7.80 ERA
Schneider: 2.1 IP, 2 ER, 3 H, 3 K, 1 BB, 8.09 ERA
Borbon: 1.2 IP, 0 ER, 0 H, 0 K, 1 BB, 6.75 ERA
Whatever else is going on in AAA, we can safely say that Pedro Borbon, Jr., isn't fooling anybody. When he gets a scoreless inning and two thirds and it brings his ERA down to 6.75, you've gotta know something's wrong. Ironically enough, tonight's opponent was former Angel farmhand Gary Glover, received from the Chisox as part of the Schoeneweis dump. Glover's doing pretty well with Nashville, 2.81 with a 50/15 K/BB ratio, but 57 hits in 61.1 IP. Color him, "suspect".
2005-08-10: Arkansas 2, Midland 4McPherson: 1-3, 1 HR, 1 RBI
Gorneault: 1-3
Mathis: 0-3
Thomas: (L, 5-3), 5.0 IP, 5 ER, 11 H, 4 K, 0 BB, 7.80 ERA
Schneider: 2.1 IP, 2 ER, 3 H, 3 K, 1 BB, 8.09 ERA
Borbon: 1.2 IP, 0 ER, 0 H, 0 K, 1 BB, 6.75 ERA

Olenberger: (L, 7-6), 7.1 IP, 3 ER, 7 H, 5 K, 2 BB, 3.78 ERA

Via FutureAngels, here's an Arkansas Democrat-Gazette piece about the Travs staying as an Angels affiliate. The city of North Little Rock recently passed a 1% sales tax boost to pay for a new municipal stadium across the river from Ray Winder.
"This election ensures that we will keep the Travelers in central Arkansas," said Valentine, who broke down more than once during the announcement of the vote and when speaking with reporters....
"The Angels have been the best people we've ever worked with in 30 years that I've been here," Valentine said.
Peel, A: 1-5, 1 HR, 1 RBI
Wood, B: 3-5, 1 RBI
Brown: 1-5, 1 HR, 2 RBI
Edwards: (L, 6-6), 5.0 IP, 8 ER, 9 H, 0 K, 2 BB, 4.57 ERA
Zimmermann: 1.0 IP, 0 ER, 0 H, 2 K, 0 BB, 3.72 ERA
Dammit, the Angels lose to the A's at three levels tonight? What the hell is up with this?
2005-08-10: Cedar Rapids did not playWood, B: 3-5, 1 RBI
Brown: 1-5, 1 HR, 2 RBI

2005-08-10: AZL Angels 3, AZL Athletics 4
Infante: 2-5
Quinlan: 0-3
Sales: 0-2, 2 BB
Jepsen: 4.0 IP, 2 ER, 2 H, 4 K, 2 BB, 5.52 ERA
Mendoza: (L, 2-2) (in relief), 4.0 IP, 1 ER, 6 H, 6 K, 1 BB, 1.29 ERA
Update 8/11: Crap, make that four levels. This is ridiculous.
2005-08-10: Great Falls 5, Orem 4Quinlan: 0-3

Trumbo: 1-5

Boyer: 2-5, 1 RBI
Pete: (L, 1-1) (in relief), 2.1 IP, 0 ER, 2 H, 2 K, 0 BB, 1.08 ERA
Still waiting for (a) Trumbo to hit as advertised, and (b) Mike Pete to turn into a pumpkin.
2005-08-10: Las Vegas 2, Iowa 7Martinez: 0-3, 2 BB

Aybar: 2-4
Young, D: 1-4
Stults: (L, 2-4), 3.0 IP, 6 ER, 9 H, 1 K, 1 BB, 6.52 ERA
Carlyle: 2.0 IP, 0 ER, 3 H, 2 K, 0 BB, 6.55 ERA
Well, despite (or maybe, because of?) Corey Patterson getting a callup to Wrigley (a move the Transaction Guy called as representative of a team "playing for next year"), the I-Cubs managed to whup the pants off 51's starter/victim Eric Stults. Buddy Carlyle continued to show his uselessness in a completely forgettable outing.
2005-08-10: Chattanooga 0, Jacksonville 6Young, D: 1-4

Abreu, T: 3-5
Guzman, J: 2-4, 1 HR, 2 RBI
Loney: 0-3, 2 BB
Martin, R: 1-1, 3 BB
Ruggiano, J: 1-3, 1 HR, 3 RBI
Billingsley: (W, 9-6), 7.0 IP, 0 ER, 3 H, 6 K, 2 BB, 4.07 ERA
Miller: 1.0 IP, 0 ER, 2 H, 0 K, 0 BB, 0.00 ERA
Billingsley had another great outing, likewise Miller -- well, great-ish, considering no strikeouts and two hits in his one inning of work -- but nice work by Loney, Guzman, and even by Justin Ruggiano, whose three-run tater busted the game open in the second inning.
2005-08-10: Daytona 2, Vero Beach 3 (Completed Early: Doubleheader)Guzman, J: 2-4, 1 HR, 2 RBI
Loney: 0-3, 2 BB

Speaking of Greg Miller, here's a Baseball America story about that sidetracked Dodger prospect.
"His command of the fastball is fine, and both his breaking balls have good depth and bite," [Dodgers farm directory Terry] Collins said. "He didn't throw his changeup at all. I don't think he has the command he'd like on it just yet, but that's understandable. But for him to be in Double-A right now is certainly encouraging. We just need to get him more innings."
Paul: 0-3
Hu: 0-3
Dunlap: 0-3
Kemp: 1-3
Bruce: 1-3, 1 HR, 3 RBI
Muegge: 6.0 IP, 2 ER, 7 H, 6 K, 1 BB, 3.55 ERA
Pilkington: (W, 7-7) (in relief), 1.0 IP, 0 ER, 1 H, 0 K, 0 BB, 3.09 ERA
Vero beat Daytona at the last possible second, scoring three runs in the seventh against Clay Rapada, with a Cole Bruce three-run homer producing the win.

Hoorelbeke: (W, 8-1) (in relief), 1.2 IP, 0 ER, 3 H, 1 K, 0 BB, 1.76 ERA
In case you were wondering, this is called a "laugher". Vero scored eight runs in the second inning -- including a grand slam by Anthony Raglani -- and never looked back. Starter J. R. Mathes for the Cubs didn't get out of the second, needless to say. Raglani's hit three home runs over the last week, and .333/.375/.800 over that time.
