Pickoff Moves, Lunchtime Edition

Jeff Weaver Negotiations "At An Impasse"

The Daily News reports that talks to renew Jeff Weaver's contract with the Dodgers have stalled, and it appears that it's unlikely an agreement will be hammered out before the end of the season.
Asked if his current salary might push him to the brink of being too expensive for the Dodgers, Weaver said: "I don't think so at all. I actually think that's part of the reason they're in no hurry to sign me, because they feel like maybe it won't make much of a difference in (next year's) payroll because of what I'm already making."

Angels Farmhand Alexi Casilla Named Midwest League Player Of The Month

Alexi Casilla was recently named Midwest League Player of the Month, according to the Kernels' website.
Casilla, who signed with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in early 2003, had one of the best single months in Cedar Rapids franchise history in July. Casilla hit .413 in 25 games for the Kernels and carried an amazing on-base percentage of .500 for the month as well as a team-best .576 slugging percentage. The 5-9, 160-pound middle infielder socked three home runs, drove in nine men, scored 24 runs and stole 16 bases.
(Hat tip, though without the link, to Stephen Smith.)

More On Brandon Wood

Normally I save these things for the Minor League Scorebook posts, but here's another one, this time via BTF. It links to the same Baseball America Hot Sheet I covered earlier in the week, but poster Rauseo's comments are worth repeating:
While Kendrick may top the list, he isn’t even close to the Angels best middle infield prospect. For my money I’ll take Brandon Wood, who is 20 - playing in Advanced A, leading the minors in homers with 35 (tied), and leading the minors in doubles (tied) WHILE playing shortstop.
Further, he nabs an Arizona Republic article quoting Angels Player Development director Tony Reagins:
"We didn't expect the power numbers to be where they are this early," Reagins said. "His body type is such where he will add strength. His pitch selection is better and he makes adjustments."

Wood is a good defender, and is athletic enough to where he could play virtually any position, but Reagins said, "As of right now, he is a shortstop and is working at that. He has a tremendous makeup, work ethic."
