Pickoff Moves

Back from doing the Hollywood thing -- anyway --

Kenny Rogers Reinstated

Rafael Palmiero: suspended 10 days for using steroids.
Kenny Rogers: suspended 13 days for assaulting a cameraman.

Let's see if I get this right: Palmiero does something that harms (if it indeed harms) himself only, while Rogers bites the hand that indirectly feeds him, and only gets three more days for it? Frankly, I think they oughta let that cameraman have a free swing at Rogers as just compensation, and to deter any more Kevin Brown-style antics in the future.

No Duh, Ross

Do the Angels really need to get offensive? Do tell, Mr. Newhan. Would they have had this problem if they hadn't signed an aging free-agent bust, and another whose career decline was all-too-visible before they took him off the market for too many dollars and too many years?

Greg Miller On Rehab Road

Dodgers prospect Greg Miller, who pitched the last inning of yesterday's 1-0 shutout of Chattanooga, is feeling pretty jaunty these days. For one thing, he's on the mound again and back with the team. After two years and two major surgeries, including one shaving the bone in his shoulder, he's counting his blessings.
"After being down for two years, I definitely won't even take playing catch for granted,"he said. "Every single day is another day I wasn't sure I was going to have."

Not-So-Whiz Kid

Jon objects to Tony Jackson of the Daily News bagging on DePodesta because of Drew's apparent unclutchness, among other things. My own feelings are somewhat mixed; if you get men on base and don't score them, what difference does it make exactly? Sure, small sample size 'n all, but at some point plate patience becomes zombification; ask the 2004 Athletics about the utility of walking when a hit is needed.

More SABR-navel-gazing on this topic at BTF. Steve, you will appreciate comment #25.

Some Other Guy Crowns Angels System #1

This time it's John Manuel, who notes that the Angels have a ton of prospects not named McPherson, Kotchman, or Santana, any number of whom would be top rated on other clubs' systems. Even with the recent trades, the A's system still is absent a lot of impact talent:
In fact, the news isn't great throughout the pitching spectrum in the A's system. Triple-A closer Jairo Garcia (still erratic, with 15 walks in just 37 innings but also 59 strikeouts) has the organization's only standout power arm, and right-hander Jason Windsor, the Most Outstanding Player of the 2004 College World Series for Cal State Fullerton, has struggled in Double-A (5.72 ERA, .303 opponents average).
The Angels still have their problems with pitching, though:
Only on the mound do the Angels lack imposing depth, but the development of Weaver and 2002 first-round pick Joe Saunders (9-7, 3.69 between Double-A and Triple-A Salt Lake), as well as right-hander Steven Shell's rebound at Arkansas (6-3, 3.20 since June 1), give them more starting prospects than most organizations.
Hopefully, all that translates to some impressive seasons for the next decade or so.
