Pickoff Moves
You're Better Than This, J.A.
J.A. Adande throws in his two pfennigs over the Kent-Bradley feud, and then comes up with some real clinkers, questioning McCourt's "commitment to spend whatever it takes to field a winner" and DePodesta's "grasp of all the nuances of assembling a roster." Now, legitimately, you could question whether Tracy "has a firm grip on the team", considering he told the pair to keep their mouths shut in front of the cameras, but the questions for DePodesta have to include the injuries as well as the inconsistency of Derek Lowe and Odalis Perez.More ProgWashtication
Another one from the Times, more speculation that Washburn won't get a contract extension. I could go either way on it; with declining strikeout rates and a significant injury history yet still being a lefty in a pitching-thin free agent offseason, Washburn will probably command more than he's worth.Angels Not Biting On Bosox Reschedule
Ho, now this is rich: apparently thanks to rescheduled games, the Red Sox are now in a position where they have to reschedule a few games late in the season, and want the Angels to accommodate them by playing a day/night doubleheader. Without the reschedule, the Sox -- who the Angels are almost certain to see in the postseason (early chicken-counting anti-jinx shield up, Mr. Scott) -- would have to play thirty consecutive games in a row. Cry me a river...The Tortoise And The Tortoise
The homer in me turned up my nose at this Jayson Stark piece about the fastest players in the game, principally because it doesn't include Chone Figgins in it in anything besides a footnote, but Rich wrote me to point out something interesting: both Jason Phillips...Five seasons into his career, still has no stolen bases and no triples. "Could be one of the slowest young guys ever," said one player.... and Benjie Molina ...
"Talk about timing with an hour glass," said one scout. "When he hits a ground ball, he doesn't even come into the picture. The play's over. Guys are running off the field. And then he gets to first base."... make the list in the slowest players, in the Gold and Silver mentions, respectively. Ouch.
Comments:
Well, Kent's also getting up there in the birthday counting stat, an important one to consider for a starting infielder.
