Revelation: Angels 5, Devil Rays 4

The case of the missing antecedant

I spent the second half of this game at John Wayne airport, at which point the game was tied and I found myself somewhat embarrassed to see Paul Byrd got himself booted before whatever piece of junk the Devil Rays had on the mound. In this case, it was Doug Waechter, a guy who had a 3.33 ERA with AAA Durham and a 3-3 record before being called up to the show; at least, unlike with the Royals, they didn't rush him much.

And so it goes through the rest of this laughable rotation; Hideo Nomo's 5-8, 7.24 ERA got him DFA'd for his trouble, but how much better is Mark Hendrickson's 5-7, 6.75 ERA? It's like an impossible dream for major league hitters, a wonderland of batting practice pitchers where even the likes of Orlando Cabrera can power one out of the park. But before I take his accomplishment down a step or three, I must consider the more important thing that also happened tonight:

Casey Kotchman homered.

Yup, that's right, and not just any old home run, but a game winner, too -- and somehow I missed it. His .067/.176/.267 line isn't liable to earn him regular playing time unless he can somehow keep this up -- well, it is the Devil Rays after all, and so we hold out hope, taking this as a harbinger of good tidings.
