Minor League Scorebook
Gorneault: 1-4
Mathis: 2-4
Gordon: 1-4, 1 HR, 1 RBI
Specht: 2-4
Cyr: (L, 4-4), 6.0 IP, 4 ER, 8 H, 5 K, 0 BB, 5.67 ERA
Borbon: 0.1 IP, 2 ER, 1 H, 0 K, 1 BB, 10.80 ERA
Dunn: 1.2 IP, 0 ER, 1 H, 3 K, 1 BB, 4.58 ERA
Jeremy Cummings, the Memphis pitcher tonight, is very familiar with AAA, this being his third time through, and so far with the best results (3-0 with a 3.27 ERA over one start). He's already been demoted and remoted from AA Springfield; eight innings of one-run ball with six strikeouts tonight, though.
Willits, R: 3-4, 1 HR, 1 RBI
Kendrick, H: 1-3
Napoli, M: 1-3, 1 HR, 3 RBI
Morales, K: 1-4
Weaver: (L, 1-1), 5.0 IP, 4 ER, 6 H, 6 K, 4 BB, 4.20 ERA
Pullin: 2.0 IP, 4 ER, 3 H, 2 K, 1 BB, 5.85 ERA
Well, so much for that callup to the Angels this year: I stumbled into Rich tonight at the Angels game, and as the conversation inevitably drifted to Jered Weaver, Rich speculated as to how the Weav might make the big club this year if the breaks go right, something he's previously committed to print. After this outing, though? Well, maybe not. Pretty ugly, and as Rich e-mailed me afterwards, it looks like Aaron Herr owns Weaver. Herr homered off Weaver last Tuesday and took him deep again tonight. Weaver managed to walk the bases loaded and surrendered a two-RBI single to center to give up the lead. Blecch.
Failed pitcher, wannabe outfielder Rick Ankiel went 2-5 with three RBIs on the night.
Update 8/7: Rich wrote yet again this morning with the following interesting missive:
Take a look at Herr's BB/SO numbers...9 BB, 89 SO
About as poor as I've ever seen. In fact, only two players have ever struck out more than 80 times in a major-league season while walking fewer than 10 times...
SEASON MODERN (1900-) WALKS <= 10 STRIKEOUTS YEAR SO BB ==================================================== 1 Chris Truby 2002 98 10 2 Kenny Williams 1987 83 10Yes, that is THE Kenny Williams.
Oh well, back to Herr. You don't throw guys like that pitches they can hit for HR. You make them chase your pitch. Shame on Weaver. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice...
Wood, B: 1-4, 1 HR, 2 RBI
McPherson: 3-5, 1 HR, 1 RBI
Pali: 2-5, 1 HR, 2 RBI
Brown: 2-5, 1 HR, 1 RBI
Johnson: 2-5, 2 HR, 4 RBI
Balkcom: 2-4, 1 HR, 1 RBI
Day: 2-4
Holcomb: (W, 7-6), 5.0 IP, 3 ER, 7 H, 7 K, 1 BB, 5.63 ERA
"We went to the wrong game", Rich wrote me in another e-mail, and how true it is. A good multihit game for D-Mac and his second homer in as many contests. Brandon Wood also homered, his 35th. He is now tied with Andruw Jones of Atlanta for the lead in the pros, but even so that's pretty impressive. Six Quakes hit seven home runs on the night; Inland Empire used three pitchers to absorb all that firepower.
Update 8/7: More on this at FutureAngels; Wood's home run tied Todd Greene and Troy Glaus on the single-season record list for Angels minor leaguers. The seven home runs tied a team record and was one shy of the Cal League record.
Collins: 0-2
Toussaint: 1-3
Rodriguez, S: 0-3
Ray: (L, 5-4), 5.0 IP, 4 ER, 6 H, 5 K, 3 BB, 4.33 ERA
Adenhart: 4.0 IP, 2 ER, 4 H, 6 K, 1 BB, 5.87 ERA
Cassevah: 3.0 IP, 0 ER, 3 H, 4 K, 0 BB, 5.08 ERA
Statia: 2-5, 1 RBI
Morris: 3-5, 1 RBI
Trumbo: 2-5, 2 RBI
Martinez: 2-3, 1 HR, 5 RBI
Reilly: 0-1, 2 BB, 2 RBI
Smith: 2-5, 1 RBI
Marek: 2.2 IP, 2 ER, 4.58 ERA
Didjurgis: (W, 3-1) (in relief), 2.1 IP, 0 ER, 0 H, 4 K, 3 BB, 3.34 ERA
Obvious hero of the game Brett Martinez has bounced around a bit; he was at Cedar Rapids, Provo, and Mesa (mostly the latter) last year, and this year has appeared at Salt Lake and Cedar Rapids in very little playing time. His utilization seems to indicate the Angels think he's an organizational player, a backup backstop to shuttle wherever there's a hole.
Young, D: 1-5
Nakamura: 1-2, 2 BB
Nall: (L, 5-5), 6.0 IP, 4 ER, 7 H, 6 K, 1 BB, 7.04 ERA
Carlyle: 1.1 IP, 0 ER, 1 H, 3 K, 2 BB, 6.96 ERA
Weber, J: 2-4
LaRoche, A: 2-4
Loney: 1-2, 2 BB, 2 RBI
Guzman, J: 0-4
Alvarez, N: 2-2, 3 RBI
Langill: 2-3, 1 RBI
Hull: (W, 6-5), 5.0 IP, 0 ER, 3 H, 5 K, 4 BB, 3.53 ERA
Martin, R: 4-5, 3 RBI
Loney: 2-5, 1 RBI
Guzman, J: 2-5, 1 HR, 3 RBI
Garcia: 0-1, 2 BB
Juarez: (W, 5-4), 6.0 IP, 0 ER, 3 H, 4 K, 3 BB, 4.44 ERA
Part of the Shawn Green trade, William Juarez has posted fair-to-good (low K/9: 5.52 with the Dominican Diamondbacks in 2000, high: 9.76 with the same team in 2001) strikeout rates but lousy WHIP rates, he got shelled in AA El Paso last year. Helped a little by park and league, he appears to be the same guy still. He's your basic Project; at 24, the clock's ticking.
Kemp: 2-3, 1 RBI
Dunlap: 1-3, 1 RBI
Denker, T: 0-3
Hoffmann: 2-4
Pilkington: (W, 6-7), 9.0 IP, 1 ER, 2 H, 6 K, 2 BB, 3.13 ERA
Yow! Fantastic game by Pilkington, who pitched a complete-game two-hitter against the Cardinals.
Carter, R: 2-4, 1 HR, 1 RBI
Johnson, B: 5.0 IP, 1 ER, 2 H, 8 K, 3 BB, 3.09 ERA
Wright: 3.0 IP, 0 ER, 0 H, 5 K, 1 BB, 1.99 ERA
Wilson: (W, 1-4) (in relief), 1.0 IP, 0 ER, 0 H, 2 K, 0 BB, 4.75 ERA
Paredes: (W, 5-0), 5.0 IP, 0 ER, 1 H, 4 K, 3 BB, 1.88 ERA
Haldis: 2.0 IP, 0 ER, 0 H, 2 K, 1 BB, 3.09 ERA
Ramirez: 2.0 IP, 0 ER, 1 H, 2 K, 0 BB, 1.83 ERA
