Take Me To Rivera: Angels 13, Red Sox 4
The sad part was watching the husk of Mike Remlinger up there coughing up another five earned runs. He's not going to be with the club much longer; lefthandedness isn't enough by itself, although you could argue that he still has some value as a LOOGY. Of the lefties he faced in tonight's game, he only allowed Kotchman a single, and struck him out once; Adam Kennedy he got to fly out to left; and struck out Steve Finley. But the fact that they left him in for garbage time is an indication of something like a trial for the balance of the season, and Remlinger's career. I imagine Theo Epstein will be on the phone again shortly.
On the home side of the pitching, Colon was brilliant up through the seventh, Donnelly managed to evade any trouble, and Greg Jones came in and did a creditable job for a fresh callup from the minors. It's too much to hope for anything like a string of quality outings from him, but we can always dream.
Without Remlinger's aid, no way does Rivera go deep twice in one game; and likewise, without the slow-mo high-80's "fastball" Wakefield offers does Kotchman go yard. But padding the offensive numbers is what the Angels have done lately in first contests. There's three more games yet to lose.
Update: I forgot to mention the wallop Tim Wakefield took on his shin on a Casey Kotchman line drive. It appears that Wakefield's leg is not broken, but nobody's saying whether or when he will make his next start. Good news, at least, that he's not seriously hurt.
