Age In Prospecty Goodness
My Kendry Morales feelers came up with this Boston Globe story indicating the Red Sox have signed another Cubano defector, Michael Abreu, for the apparently "bargain" price of $425,000. The Sox didn't pay him a super-top-dollar contract for a reason, though, and that's because he's 26. Sure, he had more homers than Kendry Morales did in his last season in the Cuban league, but as Stephen Smith writes today, often the difference between a prospect and a suspect is age. Take, for instance, the Midland Rockhounds. Subtract Daric Barton -- the return on the Mark Mulder trade last year -- from the Hounds' roster, and the average age of the club goes up by a half year. With 2005 being Moneyball star Jeremy Brown's third turn through AA, it's safe to say that his star has dimmed appreciably, even though he's hitting a lot better this time. Counting stats only matter if you're precocious; just ask Adam Piatt.
