Angels Roster Notes

The Angels activated Kelvim Escobar, and called up Joe Saunders and Jeff Mathis. Also, according to FutureAngels, Lou Merloni will be called up from rehab but not activated.

With all the speculation about Bengie Molina being gone at the end of the year, the Mathis callup makes me wonder a bit. I don't think he'll be the offensive powerhouse we were hoping for even as late as two years ago, which means the Angels will have to provide yet another bat. Certainly, it would be convenient if he were ready right now for a starting job in the majors, but I haven't heard anyone say that, and it's likely he'll have to start at Salt Lake for another year. That's a tough decision; if that means Stoneman gives another contract to Molina, it could be painful given the number of years he would likely have to give him. Instead of starting the year minus three bats (one at third, first, and left), the Angels will find themselves minus four bats. This will be an interesting offseason.

Comments:
Exactly my point. I didn't feel very confident with D-Mac coming in wholly untested, except by minor league pitching, yet expected to replace Troy Glaus. That he has increased his strikeout rate at every level was an added bonus. The injury may have been a blessing in disguise in that it uncovered a possible reason for the back problems he's had in the minors.

Its about time for Bengie to move along I suppose. . . remember that Mathis has it together defensively, that is most important for a catcher in my view, the offense is just a bonus. Mike can lecture the kid about what it will take to be a Major League calibur catcher. I just hope we dont get stuck with a 4 year contract on Bengie. Everyone knows the wear and tear on a catcher takes its toll. Eventually it will come down hard on Bengie, if it already hasnt with his past injuries. Jeff's added speed on the bases definetly plays into the small ball approach if anything..

All major league players are faster than Bengie, just about.
