Minor League Scorebook

Today was the last game of the year for all teams except for those involved in the minor league postseasons -- Arkansas, Ogden, Vero Beach, and Jacksonville -- and the rookie short-season teams, Orem and Ogden, whose seasons end Thursday, September 8. For everyone going to the postseason: good luck. For everyone going to AFL: likewise. For everyone going home: see you next year.

2005-09-05: Salt Lake 9, Las Vegas 6 #
Callaspo, A: 1-5
Specht: 4-4, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 BB
Wood, B: 3-5, 1 2B
Gorneault: 1-4
Budde: 1-5, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 K
Smith, C: 2-4, 1 RBI, 1 K
Woods: (W, 3-1), 5.0 IP, 3 ER, 7 H, 7 K, 2 BB, 1 HR, 5.89 ERA
Ramirez: 2.0 IP, 0 ER, 0 H, 2 K, 0 BB, 0.00 ERA
Brandon Wood collected his 100th extra-base hit in tonight's game. Brian Specht went 4-4, and Alberto Callaspo's single extended his hitting streak to fifteen games. The Stingers ended their season on a nine-game winning streak; the Stingers finished their season 79-65, their second-highest winning percentage in team history.

The Ramirez in today's game appears to be Edwar Ramirez, whom I wrote about earlier in the week.

2005-09-05: Arkansas did not play
2005-09-05: Rancho Cucamonga 5, Inland Empire 7 #
Fuller: 2-5, 2 2B, 1 K
Peel, A: 2-5, 2 HR, 3 RBI, 1 K
Day: 2-4, 2 K
Reyes: 3-4, 1 2B, 1 HR, 1 RBI
Thompson: 5.0 IP, 3 ER, 5.27 ERA
Touchstone: (L, 5-6) (in relief), 1.0 IP, 3 ER, 0 H, 2 K, 3 BB, 9.49 ERA
Richard Thompson, who had been trying out as a starter last year but was being used principally out of the bullpen this year, got a spot start. Nic Touchstone took the loss after pitching to three batters in the seventh and failing to record an out.
2005-09-05: Cedar Rapids 5, Kane County 0 #
Rodriguez, S: 0-4
Sutton: 3-3, 1 BB
Sandoval, F: 1-4, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 2 K

Madrigal: 1-3, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K
Leblanc: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 K
Gelinas: (W, 11-8), 9.0 IP, 0 ER, 5 H, 7 K, 0 BB, 3.81 ERA
Karl Gelinas pitched a complete game shutout for the Kernels in a strong game. The loss tossed Kane County out of the playoffs, giving them a finish 1.5 games back of first-place South Bend.
2005-09-05: AZL Angels did not play
2005-09-05: Ogden 2, Orem 3 #
Trumbo: 2-4, 2 HR, 3 RBI, 2 K
Albano: 0-1, 2 BB, 1 K
Adenhart: (W, 3-3), 6.0 IP, 0 ER, 3 H, 7 K, 0 BB, 3.24 ERA
Lynch: 2.0 IP, 0 ER, 1 H, 3 K, 0 BB, 1.71 ERA
Another gem by Nick Adenhart, who seems to be earning his big bonus money. Orem is two games up on the division over Ogden, with three left to play, and one of those against Ogden.

Update 9/6: Forgot to say something nice about Mark Trumbo's multi-homer game. It's only his second such game; he has nine dingers on the year between two levels.

Taloa: 2-3

Horlacher: 2.0 IP, 0 ER, 0 H, 5 K, 0 BB, 1.69 ERA
Horlacher's doing a nice job so far, but that 1.69 ERA is earned in only 14.0 IP.

Comments:
is there any chance brandon wood could get sent up after going 5 for 9 the past 2 days?

Zero.

Actually, let me be more specific here: he went 3-5 against a pitcher with a 5.36 ERA in a hitter's park in a hitter's league, 2-4 against another guy with a 6.58 ERA, and 1-5 against 7.20 ERA Scott Erickson (see: washed up). That would be a hell no.
