Pickoff Moves, Midday Edition
UTK Quickies
From today's UTK:- Proving that Carroll hasn't been watching the Angels closely of late: Bartolo Colon looks more like he belongs on Celebrity Fit Club than he does on the short list for the AL Cy Young Award. His back problems aren't serious, and had he not had a three-run lead on the Mariners, he probably would have kept going. Mike Scioscia and Bud Black know how to get their pitchers rest, and they used this as an opportunity to get some work for their deep bullpen. Colon is not expected to miss any time and the back problem doesn't appear to be affecting what really counts: his results on the mound.
- Carroll expects Yankees starter Mike Mussina to miss all his starts up to the last week of the season.
- It was yet another missed side session for Rich Harden, and another setback for the hopes of the A's on Sunday. Harden had a long-toss session scheduled and it looks like the "everything must go perfect" smokescreen that Larry Davis is throwing up is starting to fall apart. Harden is frustrated with his lack of progress and starting to show that. The reason for the delay in his session is that the dye used in his last imaging might not have been completely out of his body. Gadolinium DPTA, the most common contrast agent, usually is out of the body in 72 hours, so this is a difficult one to analyze from here. Watch to see if Harden is able to throw on Monday, and note that each day Harden doesn't throw reduces the chance that he'll get two or three more starts over the last few weeks of the season.
- The Orioles have lost contact with Sammy Sosa. He was already on the DL, but he certainly won't be in a Orioles uniform next year, and may be out of baseball.
Swing Away, Dallas
I tried this once before and it got all fighty in here, but let's see if this one generates more light than heat: swinging and missing has no predictive value for OPS, by which I suppose we can hope that, next year, when Dallas McPherson is able to swing something besides his crutches, he can do so with abandon.Giants Win The Pennant? Giants Win The Pennant?
David Pinto reminds us that the Dodgers are closer to the bottom of the division than the top thanks to their poor play of late, while the Giants are on a five-game winning streak, and that's without Barry Bonds -- who might show up for a cameo or three before the season's over. With Arizona key piece Troy Glaus leaving Saturday's game with a sore knee, and Bonds' knee on the mend, might San Francisco have enough to squeak past the Padres? It could happen; with seven games against San Diego this month, three at home and four on the road, the Giants could maybe pull it off, even five games back as they are.Newer› ‹Older
