Races
Aside from the Angels, who clinched tonight --
- The Red Sox split their doubleheader with Toronto, 3-1 and 7-5, while the Orioles hammered Al Leiter and the Yanks 17-9, causing the Sox to go back to a first-place tie in the AL East.
- The Chisox lost again to Detroit, 3-2. Cleveland also lost to Tampa Bay, 5-4, so no movement in the AL Central, where the Chisox retain their two-game lead over the Tribe. The Yankees, Red Sox, and Indians all have identical 92-65 records, and are also all tied for the AL Wild Card.
- The Braves clinched the NL East by slaughtering the Rockies 12-3.
- San Diego finally came up with a win and beat the Giants 9-6, reducing their magic number to two for the NL West. They face two more games against the Giants; a win in any one of those would clinch. The Padres are one game under .500 at 78-79.
- In the NL Wild Card, Houston beat the Cards 3-1. The Phillies lost to the third-place Mets 3-2, putting them two and a half games back.
