It Takes A Worried Man: Cardinals 8, Padres 5

Jake Peavy, scared

Jake Peavy,
Worried Man

"It's just another thing to talk about," said Trevor Hoffman, the closer extraordinaire who is the only Padre left in uniform from the 1998 team that was swept by the Yankees in the World Series, the last San Diego baseball team to make the playoffs. "But everyone has an 0-0 record right now."
-- Trevor Hoffman, on the importance of regular-season records in the postseason
Peavy gave up eight runs over four and a third innings for a 16.62 ERA, some part of that due to poor corner infield defense. The Cards knew where to hit 'em, and they're humiliating the Padres, currently 8-2 Cards, including a grand slam by Reggie Sanders. So seriously has Bochy taken the game that he called in his number two starter, Brian Lawrence, in relief to skip past the weaker parts of the bullpen. Of course, the horse was out of the gate once Sanders came up to bat.

But this game has implications for the Dodgers. Whether or not anyone in Chavez Ravine wants to admit it, the NL West will continue to be the NL's worst until one club or more gets serious about kicking up the level of competition, something DePodesta clearly wasn't prepared to do in the offseason last year. The price may have been too high, in which case, fine, but retooling with the aim of merely winning a weak division year after year isn't going to get it done. That was how Fox played the game, once they stopped screwing with the club (viz. Mike Piazza), hence making the creation of Dodger Blues an inevitability, and thus this site, and Fire Jim Tracy, and so on.

Update 1:08: The Pads make it interesting in the ninth by having an Angels-style inning chock full o' singles, plating three against -- Jason Isringhausen? Izzy gets serious with the bases loaded and Ramon Hernandez, striking him out on three pitches. Final score, Cards 8, Padres 5.

Update 3:33: It appears that Peavy may have strained a ribcage muscle, and has been sent to get an MRI.

Comments:
To a great extent, Dodger Thoughts as well.

I think with Beltre on fire, DePo saw a chance to take the team to the next level in 2004. But having lost Penny to injury and Choi to whatever that year, DePo did hedge his bets for 2005.

There's no doubt in my mind that DePo wants more than an 85-win team. We can all weigh in about how much of the future he should give up to get it, or how much of the present we should give up to get it in the future.

Isn't one of the bench players still hanging around from the 1998 team? Mark Sweeney?

Yeah, well, what he wants and what we'll get are likely to be two entirely different things anyway. I'm looking at 2007 as the first year they have a vague hope of contending anyway.

Re: Peavy.

It's worse than expected: broken rib.

Thanks for that, Joe. I ran it above.
