Minor League Scorebook
Well, as usual, news first. Isn't it amazing that there's so much
going on in the minors even though their season's over with (save the
AFL)?
- First off, the Orem Owlz received a unanimous nomination for the Minor League Baseball Larry MacPhail Promotional Trophy by the Pioneer League last Saturday. "The trophy is awarded to the club that did outstanding promotional work during the season in categories including community relations, off-season marketing/promotions, game-day promotions, on-field activities, radio/TV/newspaper ads, programs, yearbooks and public relations." Pretty good for a club that's changed communities and ownership in the last year.
- Speaking of awards, Brandon Wood, along with Phillies pitching prospect Scott Mathieson, were named the AFL Hitter and Pitcher of the Week for the week ending October 15. Wood was "the youngest winner of the Minor League Baseball Round-Tripper Contest as the overall home run leader for the Minors."
- John Sickles ran a shortstop smackdown between Brandon Wood and Stephen Drew, and ranks Wood "slightly better" than Drew. If the site poll has anything to do with it, it seems Wood's homers have gotten the audience all agog with his power. Heck, I'm won over and I'm not even sure he'll be a decent hitter in the show, thanks to his lack of walks...
- Also from Sickles, this ALDS gameday thread in which he asks the question, "Which franchise, the Angels or the Yankees, will win more games over the next ten years?" The answers his visitors provide are interesting.
- Finally, Howie Kendrick has his latest journal up, in which he gives advice to a kid hoping to make it to the Show.
