Pickoff Moves, Lunchtime Edition

LAT Editorial On The Angels

They can't guffaw too loudly; after all, the paper owns that big red sign over the scoreboard. And anyway, the "transparent ploy to assert his team's presence in the nation's second-largest media market" seems to have worked, if only in a kick-the-dog way of getting attention. But it's nice to hear the Times cheering for the Angels.

Mike's Not Goin' Nowhere

Not even to the Dodgers, now that they've got the position open again?
"That's not even an issue," Scioscia said about an hour and a half before his Angels were to square off with the Yankees. "This commitment from both sides is very real. There couldn't be a better environment for us to achieve, and I think of everything Arte (Moreno, the Angels' owner) and Bill (Stoneman, the general manager) have committed to this organization. It's fun to be here."
Arte Moreno was a little more insistent:
Angels owner Arte Moreno said he wouldn't stand in the way of Manager Mike Scioscia if he decided to listen to an offer from the Dodgers, who fired Manager Jim Tracy on Monday.

Then again, after a group of reporters dispersed, Moreno changed his tone.

"I'm being sarcastic," Moreno said. "Of course, I'd fight to keep him."

Jim Colborn Not Expecting To Return

Minus any word from Paul DePodesta, Dodgers pitching coach Jim Colborn expects he will not return with the team in 2006.

TV Ratings Up For Division Series Games

Thanks in part to head-to-head games between exclusively major-market teams, Nielsen Media Research found a 10% increase in viewership year-to-year in the Yankees/Angels series, versus last year's games between the Yankees and Twins. The Red Sox/White Sox game was up 18% over last year's Angels/Red Sox matchup, and the Padres/Cards series was up 6% over the Cards/Dodgers game.

Comments:
Losing Coburn was what I was really worried about when Tracy bolted. The way the Dodgers pitching staff struggled this year seemed, to me, an anomaly through his career there. One problem with signing sinker pitchers is that, almost without exception, each have very complex pitching mechanics, which need constant maintenance. And so a sinker baller needs to build familiarity with his coach in order for the machine to be well-oiled. Otherwise, they get shelled.

I guess the problem I have are the rumors that Lowe was well-lubricated on coming on to the mound on many occaisions, if you catch my alcoholic drift.

Of course the L.A. Times is going to root for the Angels. They hate McCourt, DePodesta, and anything associated with them. Until last night McCourt had won one more playoff game than Moreno but you wouldn't know that from the way the L.A. Times moons over the Angels. Even when they take shots at them they come from a pea shooter and not an elephant gun like they use for the Dodgers.
