That Beane Fellow's Pretty Sharp: Astros 10, Braves 5

I remember when everyone -- myself included -- was jumping on the "Beane's jumped the shark" bandwagon after trading Mark Mulder and Tim Hudson last offseason. And yet, here are the weak-hitting Astros knocking Tim Hudson around, the game 4-1 until Andy Pettitte gave up a home run to Andruw Jones with Marcus Giles on board. The guys who hadn't been getting it done in the postseason since 2000 still aren't getting it done in the postseason. Yikes.

Update, bottom 4th: Pettite allows a walk by Julio Franco and a single by Jeff Francoeur, but coaxes a double play from the reliably awful bat of Brian Jordan. 4-3 Astros.

Top 7th: The Braves and 'stros traded zeros for two more innings, but Pettitte got his first extra-base hit all year, a double over the head of left fielder Brian Jordan who was understandably playing the pitcher shallow. Tim Hudson then inexplicably walked Lance Berkman -- who hadn't had a hit all day -- to get to Morgan Ensberg, who had already driven in three runs on two hits. With men on the corners, the predictable result was an RBI single. 5-3 'stros, and that'll be all for Hudson.

Joey Devine comes up in relief and immediately plunks Jason Lane. Bases loaded, two out. Orlando Palmiero makes a long flyball out to right that Francoeur catches, back flat against the wall.

Top 8th: 'stros load the bases again and get a pinch-hit single off reliever Chris Reitsma over the head of Chipper Jones. With one out, the bases stay loaded and John Foster comes on to take over for Reitsma. Lance Berkman strikes out, only the second time he hasn't gotten on base, with three walks so far. Foster walks Ensberg for his fifth RBI of the day, and immediately follows up with a wild pitch that plates Craig Biggio with Jason Lane at the plate. Foster gives Lane an intentional pass, and Palmiero slaps a single into left, scoring Jason Lane and Morgan Ensberg. This game's turning into a rout, 10-3 Astros, the 'stros batting around and scoring five runs.

Bottom 9th: After getting a run on a Chipper Jones double in the eighth, the Braves made a real threat when Jeff Francoeur tripled to lead off the ninth. Ryan Langerhans struck out in a pinch hit appearance for Brian Jordan, but then Johnny Estrada singled, bringing home Francoeur. Wilson Betemit got aboard on an infield single, made worse by a bad throw by pitcher Mike Gallo, which got Estrada to third. Gallo rebounded by getting Rafael Furcal to bounce into a double play, thus avoiding having to pitch to the Joneses. Final score, 10-5 Houston.
