Joe Maddon Expected To Be Next Devil Rays Manager

MLB.com reports that Angels bench coach Joe Maddon is expected to be the next manager of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.
The job "is something I really want," said Maddon, 51, in a Friday interview, noting he was a good fit for the position given the skills he has which he feels are compatible with the Rays' needs.

Maddon, who was the Angels bench coach from 1996 to 2005, is a former Minor League catcher who has been in the Angels organization for 31 years. He has been a Major League coach for the past 12 seasons and was a serious candidate for the Red Sox job before Terry Francona was hired in 2003. Among Maddon's strong suits are his organizational skills and acumen crunching baseball data via the computer.

Sad to see him go, but I wish him the best of luck for 152 games per year.

It's about damn time that one of the Angels' coaches gets a shot. Good for Joe.

does that mean...no more MADDON MUSINGS!??! oh no!!!

For whatever reason, I've always liked Maddon. It's unfortunate that he never really got a full-time managerial opportunity with the Angels since he's pretty much been an Angel-for-life, and I echo Seitz's 152-game wish.

I've always gotten the impression that, to the extent Scioscia looks at anything remotely sabermetric, it's attributable to Maddon. I hope Mike has the wisdom to replace Joe with someone who also will offer a different outlook on things.
