Pickoff Moves

Pin The Tail On The GM Contest: Larry Beinfest

The Daily News reports Larry Beinfest, present GM of the Marlins, might be interested in the Dodgers GM job. He's long been known to want a position with a club on the west coast, as he was an all-city shortstop in Chatsworth, and spends his offseasons here.
Beinfest is signed through 2007. But a source close to Beinfest said Beinfest long has aspired to a job on the West Coast, closer to home, and that if the Dodgers requested permission to interview him the Marlins surely wouldn't stand in his way.

It remains unclear, though, whether the Dodgers have sought such permission. Two messages left by the Daily News on Beinfest's cell phone Wednesday went unreturned.

Update: How could I forget Mike's Baseball Rants very un-SABR take on DePo's firing? In short:
I know he's a popular dude in the sabermetric world, but I defy anyone to demonstrate how the moves he made especially in 2005 were sabermetrically minded or even sound.
That will make Matt Welch sleep sounder at night, I'm sure...

Elmer Dessens Declines His Option

In that same article: Elmer Dessens declined his end of a $1.3M mutual option, and becomes a free agent. Dessens expressed interest in returning if an agreement can be worked out. That is, assuming there's a GM to work a deal with.

Hudler & Physioc Return

Despite the protestation of Angels fans and enemies alike, Rex Hudler and Steve Physioc will return for 2006. The story was a one-liner in yesterday's Times story about the Angels' pursuit of Manny Ramirez; the fact that I didn't say anything about it probably just means I was subconsciously hoping that Vin Scully might end up in the Angels booth. No such luck, although I must say I don't hate Rex and Fizz the way some people do.

It's Official: Angels Hot After Konerko

You know, I sure hope this is just a way of driving up the price for the White Sox out of sheer spite. Do the Angels really have so little faith in their farm that they're willing to buy one, maybe two okay years of an aging first baseman at the price of far too much money and way too many years? Don't the Angels already have too many immobile contracts and players, not to mention a ton of first base prospects already?
Konerko is likely seeking a four- or five-year deal in the $50 million-$60 million range. He batted .283 with 40 home runs and 100 RBIs last year and was the MVP of the American League Championship Series.
Konerko would supposedly have a lot of reasons to want to join the Angels: he played under Scioscia in the Dodgers minor leagues, the team is closer to his Arizona home, and the Halos are one of the few teams that can afford him. Bill Stoneman, just remember this: there may be no "K" in "Thome", but "Konerko" is just a different way to spell it.

Comments:
Good one on Thome and Konerko. However, there are lots of Ks in the former -- 1762 to be exact. He's already 10th all time in that category. By the time Thome finishes his current contract, he could be third.

I know, and I meant to say something about that.

Beinfest? The guy on the other end of The Trade? Wow, that sends a message, doesn't it?

That'd be way to weird.

Well, you have to admit it didn't work out so well for either party...

MLB Extra Innings almost always gets the Angels feed of their games, and I really find the television duo to be the worst I've heard. If you think you have it bad in your market, watch and Angels game. It will really change your opinion of your local broadcasters.

Well, you have to admit it didn't work out so well for either party...

If you want to look at it that way, it makes even less sense.

There are three exemplars of bad broadcasters.

1) Whoever does the Pirates. No one listens to them, and so they are awful.
2) Whoever does the Braves. Stiff and dull, even after Chip Carey joined the team.
3) The White Sox.

Fizz and Rex aren't good, but they are tolerable. If I had to listen to one of those three -- well, I'd start going to minor league games.
