Pickoff Moves, Bedtime Edition

Drug Warriors, Resume Your Breathless Horror

Oh, remember that outfielder caught using steroids that we were all supposed to care about? Well, turns out it was former All-Star Matt Lawton, for whom the Cubs traded usedta-be-a-prospect Jody Gerut, a scant thirteen days prior. As evidence of the duplicity of GMs, Jim Hendry said at the time, "We're committed to you for this year and next year." Not exactly encouraging behavior, but it explains why they turned around and unloaded Lawton so quickly once they were done. Of course, and strictly as an aside -- Carroll, you tease. And here I thought -- nay, hoped -- it would be Finley.

Sic Transit Gloria Twinkies

Al Yellon has a great little photo series on the old Metropolitan Stadium just two years after it was abandoned. What happens to old baseball stadia? Here's one answer.

Dodgers GM Search

The Dodgers are "making considerable progress" in their GM search, which of course means that another GM candidate is off the boards, namely Gerry Hunsicker. Hunsicker is expected to sign with Tampa Bay, and how pathetic is it when the Dodgers fall below the Devil Rays as a destination of choice for front office executives? I now wholeheartedly commend Jon's suggestion of Kim Ng, principally because she is the most qualified of candidates not named Jim Bowden. That is, of course, assuming reports about Theo Epstein being contacted (despite the likelihood of his turning up his nose at the Chavez Ravine job) don't lead to anything. If he's serious about working for Hurricane Frank, I suggest he get one of those one-way deals that J.D. Drew negotiated from DePo where the team can't fire him for five years but he can walk after two, as well as some sort of contractual garlic to ward off the vampire Lasorda.

Lame Bobbleheads, #1 In A Series

... of players who either didn't deliver despite a history of being good, or delivered and were kinda jerks anyway.

Comments:
Matt Lawton is my favorite player, i fely bad when he was traded.and good news Hunsicker is going with tampa bay.

Much as I like Jon, I don't think he's qualified for the job. Of course, neither am I...

It's gotta be Bowden. Nothing would be funnier than reading the hysterical comments on this board and others during Bowden's reign.

Why the enthusiasim for Ng? Has she ever said or did anything to suggest she'd be a competent gm? I mean, how do we know she wouldn't be the distaff version of Bill Bavasi?

Ng over Bowden? Is this supposed to be a question?
