Pickoff Moves

Dave Stewart: Can I Be GM, Huh, Can I?

"I'm more qualified than all of the people they've marched in there", former Dodger pitcher Dave Stewart announced to the Times after the GM meetings broke up. I'm sure, at this rate, the McCourts could be interviewing candidates through February.

Angels Free Agency Notes

Rather than summarize this graf from the Times story above, I'll copy-n-paste:
Angel General Manager Bill Stoneman said he "probably" would make his initial offers to some free agents today, a list that presumably includes Paul Konerko. "We've got ideas and we're really not the types to mess around a lot," Stoneman said. "We really get right into it." … The Angels already have submitted an offer to free-agent pitcher Paul Byrd. If Byrd signs elsewhere, Stoneman said, the Angels would be unlikely to consider Scot Shields for a place in the rotation. … Were the Angels to sign Konerko, or another high-end free agent, they would be unlikely to add another high-priced player, Stoneman said. But, he added, he said the same thing two off-seasons ago, and the club stacked Vladimir Guerrero on top of Bartolo Colon and Kelvim Escobar. "It probably would rule out a lot," he said, "but if the big one becomes available, maybe you change your mind."

Pads May Adjust Petco Dimensions

The next three come via BTF, just so you know... the Padres may adjust the outfield dimensions at Petco to make it a little more hitter-friendly.
"At the last VP meeting we had, they had some architects out there," Towers said. "It's not going to be dramatic -- cutting the 411 corner to around 395. Right field and the gap are not going to change.

"I'm for it. It's still going to be a pitcher's park. It will give some of your left-handed power hitters a chance to hit a few more home runs. That 411's big. It'll make it a little more fair. Aesthetically, it will look better, too."

Tell you what, instead of making the park more hitter-friendly, why don't the Pads get some more friendly hitters instead? (BTF thread)

Ichiro Wants Out?

While I'm sure that Ichiro's frustrated with Seattle's late losing seasons, one wonders just how long the Mariners can tolerate a player who has only 15 home runs in a corner outfield spot. That is, he's not the superstar he thinks he is.

Manny Rumors

The Rev forwards an MLB.com story about Manny-to-the-somewhere-besides-Boston; now we add this New York Times piece by Murray Chass to the pile (h/t BTF). Wake me when spring training starts and he's in someone else's uniform. Mercifully, Chass writes "Anaheim is said to be his destination of choice, although Lucchino said that Ramirez had not expressed a preference." More made-up stuff!

Comments:
Of course, Lucchino would never hint that Manny has a preference, even if Manny has told him privately that he won't play baseball again unless it is the Angels. It would hinder trade talks with other teams and put them in bad shape with the Angels.
