A Thought About Konerko And Manny

  1. The Dodgers are in chaos and are almost certain to not have a GM to send to the GM meetings.
  2. The Dodgers just came off their second worst season in Los Angeles history.
  3. Meantime, the Angels are coming off a postseason run where they were three wins from going to the World Series, and spinning tales about acquiring two of the biggest marquee names in the game.
Publicity? Marketing? You tell me...

Comments:
Or a real commitment to putting a quality team on the field, instead of branding the ownership.

Well, my point is that, like last year's alleged pursuit of Randy Johnson, Stoneman won't pull the trigger on a deal that might make the team better for a year or two but will likely ruin payroll flexibility (and real performance) thereafter.

Great point though Rob. McCourt seems to spend more time, effort, and money on marketing than organization for a succesful franchisee. Arte can say one or two comments every now and then (i.e. the comment about he will spend what it takes around July when all the bad press was at its peak around Dodgers payroll. In reality there was less than $3 million in difference between the 2 in 2005) and have the positive media story.

As an Angel fan the way these two owners have approached their recent purchases has truly baffled me, and extremely glad Arte purchased the Angels, and McCourt purchase the Dodgers.
