Roster Notes
- The Daily News says the Dodgers are pursuing Kevin Mench of the Rangers, possibly for Jonathan Broxton.
- Former Dodger GM Dan Evans interviewed for the open Boston GM spot.
- The Yanks are close to signing Bernie Williams to a one-year, $2M deal. Oh, the humanity...
- Update: The Chicago Sun-Times reports the Dodgers are talking to the Cubs about a Milton Bradley for Todd Walker swap.
- The first two rounds of the Rule 5 draft are out, and the Dodgers were raided twice. The Rockies selected Luis Gonzalez, while the Marlins grabbed LHP Mike McGrew. Former Angels prospect Steven Andrade got nabbed by the Devil Rays from the Blue Jays.
- Update 2: The Red Sox have dealt Edgar Rentaria to the Braves, for 3B prospect Andy Marte. It would certainly give the Orlando Cabrera-to-the-Red Sox rumors some credibility. Marte was ranked as the top prospect in the Braves' system by Baseball America.
- The Rockies signed Jose Mesa to a one-year deal.
- Update 3: The Mets have signed Jose Valentin to a minor league deal.
- The Giants signed the former Padre Mark Sweeney, to a two year, $1.8M deal.
- Detroit has signed former closer Todd Jones to another round in that position. Troy Percival, signed last year, has spent months on the DL. (Wonder if he'll be released?)
- Rotoworld cites a linkless report by Peter Gammons who claims the Red Sox aren't interested in picking up Orlando Cabrera's contract from the Angels, though they have asked about Maicer Izturis.
- The Blue Jays are talking to the Rangers about acquiring just-traded-for Brad Wilkerson, according to the Toronto Globe And Mail.
- Rotoworld says the Royals have signed Elmer Dessens to a two-year deal rumored to be worth $3.4M.
- Update 4: Julio Franco, refused arbitration by the Braves, is near to signing a two year contract with the Mets. It's just amazing this guy can still find a job as a player in baseball at all, let alone that he didn't even have to wait a week.
Comments:
milton bradley for todd walker? why would we want him? and why all this talk of 2nd basemen? tsk, tsk.
just saw a report on espn that the orioles signed ramon hernandez, do you know what's up with javy lopez?
Kevin Hench of foxsports.com has posted a funny article about our new manager Grady Little, calling him the "lump of coal" in Dodger fans' stockings. He also describes Grady as empty-faced, slack-jawed, and dull-eyed. Yikes.
It would appear the Angels are taking one step backwards this coming year, going with the kids instead of investing big in Manny Ramirez or some other proven slugger. Probably a sound strategy for the long haul.
Let's see...the BoSox have traded their top SS prospect in Hanley Ramirez...and their starting SS in Renteria. The Angels are up to their ears in shorstops. The Angels just saved several million dollars by terminating their relationship with Bengie-Mo. And the Red Sox just saved about $8 million (approximately the same amount that Erstad and Finley make).
Verrrrrrrrrry eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeenteresting.
Of course, Julio Lugo is another possible SS target for Boston, but still.

Bill Lajoie, Boston's most visible remaining baseball man, was quoted today saying that the the team was likely to solve its shortstop dilmena via free agnecy.
When Stoneman signed Vlad, Bart, Kelvim & Guillen, he and Arte said the four were to be a "bridge" between the 2002 championship team and the point in time the farm system was ready to produce major league players. I doubt Stoneman is going to empty his farm system, jack up his payroll, and upset his "master plan" to acquire Manny at this point in time. He strikes me as a very cautious, deliberate g.m.
Just read that Miguel Tejada wants to be traded. How 'bout O-Cab and a lesser prospect or two for Miggie, who could be the righthanded stick we need?
