Roster Notes
- Former Texas ace Kenny Rogers has signed a two-year, $16M deal with the Tigers.
- CBS 4 in Boston says Bill Mueller has signed a deal with the Dodgers, one Rotoworld speculates will be two years long for around or more than the Pirates' $7M offer.
- Paul Bako will be the Royals' backup backstop next year.
- Miguel Tejada wants out of Baltimore because he doesn't like the team's direction. Crybaby.
- Speaking of the O's and overspending, Baltimore signed former Padres and A's catcher Ramon Hernandez, for four years and $27.5M.
- I missed this in today's Times, but the Angels are working a deal to send Josh Paul to Tampa Bay.
- Somehow the Nats came to their senses and are backing away from a proposed deal that would send Dave Roberts to Washington.
- Update: Scott Boras couldn't get the Brewers interested in Jarrod Washburn.
- Update: The Times is reporting that the Angels are talking a deal to send Erstad to the Orioles, getting Javy Lopez in return.
Erstad, who has the same 2006 salary ($8.5 million) as Lopez, would fill the Orioles' need for a top-notch defensive first baseman and new Manager Sam Perlozzo's desire for more gritty, team-oriented players. A trade also would clear a full-time spot for Angel first base prospect Casey Kotchman.
Lopez would be an emergency catcher and full-time DH were he acquired. - The Halos are also talking to Minnesota about reliever J.C. Romero, in return giving up a prospect.
- Manny Ramirez update:
The Angels and Red Sox made virtually no progress in trade talks regarding Ramirez here. According to a source, Boston first asked for a package headed by pitcher Ervin Santana and Kotchman, but the Red Sox were told Santana is not available.
The Red Sox countered with a request for one of two pitchers, Kelvim Escobar or Scot Shields, two of three prospects from a pool of shortstop Brandon Wood, second baseman Howie Kendrick and shortstop Erick Aybar, and one other minor leaguer. But the Angels turned that down as well.
Comments:
The L.A. Times is reporting that the Angels have kicked around the idea of trading Erstad for Baltimore's Javey Lopez. They've also discussed acquiring the Twin's J.C. Romero, a lefthanded relief pitcher.
Yes, Mike DiGiovanna's LA Times update was interesting. The more i think about it, the more Nomar makes sense for us. I'm still not sold that D-Mac is the answer at 3B, so Nomar would be a good option there as well as DH. He also has that interchangability factor the Halos really like and utilize, that Frank Thomas and Piazza don't. And he's a local guy too, coming home.
My theory is D-Mac has three months to prove he's an answer at third. After that, he's tradebait or who knows what.
Seriously, why would Boston even bother asking for a combination that includes two of Wood, Kendrick & Aybar, PLUS another prospect, PLUS a pitcher, unless they're planning to send David Ortiz along with Manny?
My money is on Ramirez staying in Boston. I don't think that there's any team foolish enough to satisfy Boston's demands.

6. Will Manny Ramirez get traded?
Not now. His personal problems are his responsibility, not those of the team. The Angels will not give up value, and neither can the Mets. The three-way with the Dodgers and Phillies (Ramirez to L.A.; Derek Lowe, Trot Nixon and a prospect to Philly; Bobby Abreu, J.D. Drew and a prospect to Boston) fell apart quickly. For $160 million, it is Ramirez's job to accept some adult responsibility. He can ask to be traded, but he has no right to demand one. He can sit at home and forfeit $57 million, or he can forfeit the last three years and pay $40 million in damages to be a free agent.

If we are even thinking about 2 of our 3 best prospects (who I hope to see in a Halos uniform when I visit in 2007) for Manny, who is undoubtedly a good hitter but brings the possibility of clubhouse unrest, then the senior management needs their heads examining. Cabrera to the Sox and Miguel Tejada to us might be interesting though.
If we were to acquire Miggie, we could move Wood to another position, assuming Wood even makes it to the show. There's been alot of talk that Wood doesn't have the range to be a top-flight major league shortstop and/or that he will "out grow" the position. He could replace D-Mac at third, perhaps, or become a Jeff Kent type bopper at second, or an outfielder.
I see John Sickels has a column posted at Rotowire -- subscription only, alas -- entitled "Up the Middle in Anaheim." Has anyone read the column and if so is there anything interesting in it?
Anon -- I think that talk isn't justified based on most of the stuff I've read recently. He's got decent, not great, range. And the comment about Wood not making it to the majors is well-taken; they are called prospects after all, and guys who strike out as much as Wood does will have to be watched closely.
The Erstad deal makes no sense to me. Lopez will come in and take at bats away from Rivera, who is cheaper, and just as good if not better. Let's see, a 34 year old who has all that wear and tear from catching his entire career, or a 28 year old who has shown ability to play every day, and who can play on days when GA needs to DH.
The deal only makes sense if the Angels are determined to play Erstad at first base or trade him. It only makes sense if they continue the stupidity of not playing Erstad in center. Deals necessitated by their own stupidity don't excite me all that much.
