Pickoff Moves
Jeff Weaver And Dodgers Divorce
"It just didn't work out" is how GM Ned Colletti ended up explaining the fact that Jeff Weaver won't be returning to the Dodgers in 2006. Weaver allegedly has interest from the Angels, Red Sox, Orioles, and Diamondbacks. In that same article, it appears that Dan Warthen, a former pitching coach for the Mariners and Padres, will be the Dodgers' new bullpen coach.
Bengie Molina Still Looking For A Deal
Toronto said they'd be interested in Bengie Molina, but "only if the price is right", which is code for, "come in under our budget or you and your flaky hamstrings can sign with the Padres". Rotoworld says that Newsday thinks the Yanks ought to sign him and make Posada a DH, but even they have payroll limits these days.Update: Forgot to mention this, but it's as good a place to drop this as any: speaking of the Pads' catching situation, it appears the Padres will start Doug Mirabelli.
The trade [of Mirabelli for Mark Loretta] was variously seen as: a) a one-sided salary dump; b) a rash reaction to Loretta's injury-influenced decline; c) a dangerous gamble on Josh Barfield's development at second base; and d) a sign of desperation in the search for Ramon Hernandez's replacement behind the plate.Eeew.
Where Do The Angels Play?
So the Halos and Anaheim go to court today to settle the name of the club. It's a silly dispute in my mind; while there's plenty of precedent for geographical misnaming (the New York Giants who play in New Jersey), it seems pretty straightforward that the club's name is and should continue to be Anaheim under a letter-and-intent-of-the-agreement understanding. Yet, as Arte has pointed out, the team has actually sent the city revenue sharing checks subsequent to the name change, leading up to the question, who knows more about branding, Arte or Pringle? Both sides have backed themselves into a corner now, and as is often true of small stakes games, the fighting is particularly vicious as a result.Newer› ‹Older
