Only Human: Baylor Bears 4, CSULB Dirtbags 3

Last week's hero, Andrew Carpenter, who threw a one-hit shutout facing only one more than the minimum against the University of Illinois, Chicago team, turned into this week's loser as the Baylor Bears scratched out four runs off him. The difference in this game versus Friday's was the improved level of play, with a total of one error apiece between both sides on Saturday versus four on Friday, all by the Bears.

Both pitchers were great through three, but in the fourth, an error by second baseman Kevin Russo and a line drive single that hit Baylor starter Corey Van Allen on the ankle opened the door for a three-run Dirtbag inning. One of the runs scored on two out, with a brilliant slide at the plate by Jose Hernandez. All Van Allen's runs were unearned thanks to the error.

The Bags also got some great defensive plays, the cappers being a phenominal 1-3-5-2 out at the plate in the eighth, and a CS 2-4 that ended in a collision at second base, erasing CF Chase Gerdes. It helped out reliever Mike Malott, who had worked his way through some trouble, giving up three hits in only an inning of work. Owen Reid had preceded him with an inning and two thirds of scoreless relief.
