Games, Games, Games

The Evan Longoria Show: CSULB Dirtbags 4, Baylor Bears 3

When you just won made it to the College World Series, it's tough to do an encore; for one thing, the majors want all your best players, and all your best players want to be in the Show. For Baylor, eleven players left the team; one of them was not Friday night's starter, Ryan LaMotta, who had a 5-2 record last year with a 2.16 ERA. He pitched a good game last night, but he balked in a run following a pair of errors, and gave up the game winner on a bouncing ball that went over the head of shortstop Beamer Weems. (What a great name!)

On the Dirtbags' side, Evan Longoria went 3-3 with a walk, driving in one of the team's four runs. The Dirtbags only struck out once, while Jared Hughes collected five of the Dirtbags' seven Bears punchouts. Baylor mounted a ninth inning rally on closer Donnie Hume, when LF Seth Fortenberry singled and Hume, misplaying a sacrifice bunt, allowed Matt Sodolak to reach first and Fortenberry to advance to third. Baylor called up pinch hitter Seth Hammock, who worked the count full -- and Hume got him looking on a called third strike. Hume then struck out right fielder Kevin Sevigny to end the threat, a ballsy comeback to what could have been a disastrous inning.

Angels 10, Padres 1

Your basic squish operation from early spring training, the Angels blasted the Pads with a six-run seventh, getting at bats to almost anybody you've ever remotely heard of as a prospect. Andy Ashby gave up two runs in an inning of work.

Braves 8, Dodgers 7

I refuse to type the name Jarrod Saltalamacchia; whenever you see it spelt out in full here, rest assured I cut and pasted it. In any event, "Salty" blasted the game winning three-run dinger off Johnathan Broxton. Franquelis "Run Donor" Osoria and Brian Meadows did about as well as expected (i.e., not well), both giving up a pair of runs, the former in one inning and the latter in two. Atlanta retread Mike Remlinger gave up four hits and three earned runs in two outs. Call it a career, Mike.

Comments:
Am I missing something? Did Baylor win a different CWS last year?

No, I'm just an idiot.
