Kinda weak day for birthdays ...

Overcoming Stanolozol For Pre-Teens: Little League World Series Stadium Moves Fences Out

Ah, the rippling muscles of those 12-year-olds, and their famously churlish behavior towards the press. The power hitting in Little League has gotten so pervasive that they're moving back the fences at South Williamsport's Howard J. Lamade and Volunteer stadiums. Must be the steroids... not.

Barry Wants To Retire A Giant -- And The Sooner, The Better

Barry Bonds' life is "in shambles", and the best thing about spring training is that it's practically over.
Bonds joked that he is ready for the season to start because then "it's closer to being over." He is in the final year of a $90 million, five-year contract and will be eligible for free agency after the World Series.

Comments:
If he used steroids (of which I am about 99% convinced he did), then his life being in shambles is essentially of his own making. One thing that athletes should have figured out by now is that you need to be nice to the media even if you are really an asshole (especially if you are an asshole). If the media doesn't like you and you do something wrong, you will never hear the end of it. Barry Bonds represents the perfect storm of media attacks, and most of it is his own fault.

Hey Rob, did you notice the Rangers released Erubiel Durazo yesterday? Could he be the left handed bat off the bench that the Angels are looking for?

Yes, I did, and no, he isn't. That would be Dallas McPherson, if he can right himself.

I'm 100% positive that Bonds used steroids, since he has admitted under oath that he did.

He admitted using BALCO products "The Clear" and "The Cream." Both of those products were steroids. Therefore, Bonds has admitted using steroids.

That said, I seriously wonder whether he would be quite the lightning rod that he is if his skin had a paler complexion.

What's the latest on position players? I'm thinking with McPherson going down, both Q and Kingfish will be on the 25-man roster (at least until D-Mac hits 15 homers in AAA). Is there room for both?

I don't think it's Barry's skin color--I think he's a lightning rod 'cause he's got such a bad attitude and 'cause the steroids worked so dramatically well for him.

I agree with Mr. Anon. This is Bonds has been an asshole for as long as he has been a public figure. To say that it is because he is black is a little naive.

Sosa' black, and few doubt his use of steriods. He's also a jerk, just not to the media. (Usually.)

I think this is about a guy who's been rude and churlish for years, who wanted more attention for how great he was. (He reportedly started the 'roids after 1998's home run chase.) Then when he got what he wanted he discovered that while fan adoration was cool, the media was invasive, and acted like an ass for years to those who (however badly they behaved) where in part responsible for his fame.

Tough life, Bar, but it's one you chose. If you don't like it, CHANGE. It's not like he doesn't have the means or opportunity.

People, let me tell you 'bout my best friend, Mark McGwire, the great white hope, who was protected by an army of enablers when the Andro story first appeared. Think anyone wants to overturn his legacy? Where are the calls for an asterix on that ROID 1989 World Championship of Canseco and McGwire - sorry A's, gotta give that trophy to the GIANTS...

See, I think both The Rev and mmorgaine are correct. While Bonds is a jerk of the first order, and a steroid user to boot, the fact is that even now, with McGwire on the HOF ballot (is that for this year or next?), nobody is calling for his records to be purged. And while Sosa is dark-skinned, he has been "friendly" to the media. Meanwhile, Bonds is depicted (not in so many words) as an "uppity N-Word." Outspoken people of color draw a lot more heat than white people of similar disposition, or people of color who "know their place." Smilin' Sammy gets a pass, but not scowling Barry. McGwire was not nearly as media-friendly or accessible as Sosa, even in 1998, but he was forgiven for being something of a jerk.

As a general rule, I look with a great deal of skepticism upon most claims of racial animus, but I think one has to be naive to think that Bonds' race is not a factor in why he has been the focus of the steroid scandal. It's not the only factor, or even the most important one, but I've got to believe that it plays a part.

I think that's ridiculous. McGwire was never a jerk to the media like McGwire was, he was always just more private. During his career he would answer questions, etc., and never be an asshole in particular (the only instance I can remember of that was when the Andro was found and he seemed more upset that someone was snooping in his locker than anything else...besides, he ended up admitted using and then stopped using it shortly afterwards because he didn't want to set a bad example). When his baseball career was over, he completely disappeared and so the media no longer cared about him. When he showed up last year in Congress, he again took the tactic that he wasn't going to talk about that stuff and he was creamed in the media for it...but he never talked about it again, and so the story died (whereas Palmiero was ruined because of a future positive drug test...he is light-skinned and media-friendly and they still went after him). Sosa is a good example of the guy who is a jerk to people other than the media and because of that the media liked him. Jose Canseco (half of your "he-is-white" example) was ripped apart in the media, because he wasn't very friendly to them.

Give me an example of a white guy who has been an asshole to the media and the media still treated him nicely. Now, I could see an argument that blacks are more prone to having the type of behavior that Barry, Terrell Owens, etc. exhibit, but that doesn't mean that the media is racistly trying to make them fail. Maybe whites just understand the media game better?

And Rev, Mike Greenwell suggest that Canseco's 1988 MVP season should be revoked because of his admitted steroid use. No one but a few idiots in the media are actually requesting that any roid-aided records get expunged...that would be ridiculous.

Jeff Kent is white, an a-hole, and gets lambasted by the media pretty regularly.

The main reason Bonds pulls more grief from the media is that he is about to break Ruth and Aaron's records. None of the other juiceheads are close to dragging baseball's storied history into the mud.

Remember, when Maris bested Ruth's single season home run record, he was given crap by the media -- even though he was white and not on juice. His crime, for which he earned a *, was playing in more games than Ruth.

I am amazed at the number of people who think there is an asterisk on Maris's numbers. There is not.

Y'know, if Bonds were media friendly, and there were no steroids controversy, we'd see all kinds of feel-good articles and t-shirts and commerative do-dahs leading up to the shining history making moment when he hits 715. And again at 756, if it were to happen. I think the media is going after Bonds because 1) He's very unlikeable; AND 2) He's done something lots of folks consider unethical.

I don't think the fact that he's black has anything to do with it. We'd be celebrating if he were a nice, non-steriod using player. You'd be able to buy little jars of dirt from where the guy stood once when he was five. Every businessman in baseball mourns this opportunity, and wishes Bonds were likeable, and not seen as a cheater.
