Roster Notes
- Tim Salmon's doing well in the field as well as at the plate, albeit the sample size for the field is a lot smaller.
"He's attacking the ball as well as we've ever seen him, he moved well in the outfield, and he's running the bases well," Manager Mike Scioscia said. "He's passing every test."
Salmon hasn't been told anything, "but I'm pleased with the way things are lining up," he said. He's also been "blown away" by the reaction of fans, who have given him rousing ovations before most of his home at-bats.
- The Angels are interested in trading for David Dellucci, and the Rangers have expressed interest in Kevin Gregg; however, it's unlikely the Rangers would make a trade with a division rival. The Angels are also thinking about trading for Padres reserve Ben Johnson, 25, who had a .213/.310/.467 line for the Pads last year in 75 at bats, but hit .312/.394/.558 with AAA Portland in 414 AB.
- Not a roster note, but the Angels are hoping to conclude their TV deal with FSN before the season starts.
- Mike DiGiovanna thinks Kelvim Escobar could be a Cy Young winner this year, and I'll put it up there as a possibility, but he'll have to get past Roy Halliday or Johan Santana first.
- The Angels sent down Jason Bulger and Scott Dunn to minor league camp. The Angels spring training roster at major league camp is 36.
- Eric Gagné's appeal hearing has been postponed, meaning he will be available for opening day if needed.
- The Dodgers also demoted Jonathan Broxton and D.J. Houlton to AAA Las Vegas. Broxton is expected to be the closer in Vegas.
- One and only one of Aaron Sele and Brian Meadows could still make the team.
- Rafael Furcal has developed back spasms.
Furcal's injury basically assures a roster spot to Ramon Martinez, who took over for Furcal and homered on Tuesday, although nobody with the club has told Martinez anything. He and reliever Brian Meadows have escape clauses allowing them to leave if they are not guaranteed roster spots by Wednesday.
- Hee Seop Choi tweaked his hamstring and will be examined tomorrow.
- Jeremy Reed's hand is not broken, despite earlier reports that it was. The Mariner centerfielder had a fracture on the bone in the same place when he was a child and it was most recently misdiagnosed.
