Why Players Shouldn't Give Out The "Hometown Discount"
Just ask Bronson Arroyo, freshly traded to the Reds for Wily Mo Peña:
Before agreeing to give the Red Sox a hometown discount, Arroyo said, he told the team's negotiators that "I'm not signing this deal to end up in Tampa Bay in two weeks. And they said to me, `There's no deal for you on the table right now and we don't foresee trading you anytime in the near future.' Those were the exact words.""In my mind this is pretty soon, but they told me there was no guarantee," he said.
