Dodgers Spring Training: Time For Vero To Move On
The game has changed. The Dodgers have changed. Vero Beach has changed.Baseball is no longer the national pastime. It's just another bottom-line business.
The Dodgers are no longer considered baseball royalty, a prestigious franchise that proudly clung to tradition and earned the envy of every team outside the Bronx. They're just another team.
And Vero Beach is no longer a mostly seasonal, otherwise-obscure, small town dominated by hard-core Dodgers fans. Indian River County has become increasingly more diverse as the population booms and the franchise's Brooklyn-based following continues to die off.
Remember: It has been 47 years since the Dodgers moved to Los Angeles.
So, as much as I hope the Dodgers decide to stay, I won't be surprised if they go to Glendale or Goodyear or whichever Arizona city makes the best offer. And, if it happens, I won't blame them for leaving.
