Minor League Scorebook
News
- MILB.com has its own story about Howie Kendrick's callup. Mike Scioscia was fairly direct: Kendrick is to be a "bat on the bench and depth in the field". Scioscia hasn't ruled out at bats from the DH position.
Scioscia said the Angels will have Kendrick work out at third base in addition to second to help with his versatility, but the organization is not planning a position switch. Kendrick is ready for whatever comes his way.
He's also working on his platitude quotes:"No one has said anything to me, but I'm open to moving anywhere if it helps the team," Kendrick said.
Adam Kennedy's taking the high road:"I can only play well and continue to try and help the team and that will speak for itself. Whatever happens, so be it and make the decision tough," said Kennedy, who is a free agent at the end of this season. "I'm not trying to think about it as him versus me, but both of us working together. I think that is the way to look at it."
Good for you, Adam. - The weekly notebooks are out for the PCL, the Texas League, the Cal League, the Midwest League, the Southern League, the Sally League, and the FSL.
- Daniel Hawkins got a callup to Rancho from Cedar Rapids.
Scores
Specht: 0-3, 2 BB, 1 K
Gorneault: 1-5, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 K
Napoli, M: 1-4, 1 2B, 1 BB, 1 K
McPherson: 3-4, 2 2B, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 BB
Morales: 1-5, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 2 K
Murphy: 2-5, 1 RBI, 2 K
Weaver, Jer: 5.0 IP, 5 ER, 7 H, 6 K, 2 BB, 1 HR, 3.91 ERA
Jones: (BS, 3)(W, 1-2) (in relief), 2.0 IP, 1 ER, 1 H, 1 K, 0 BB, 1 HR, 7.00 ERA
I speculated that Portland being a slightly pitcher-friendly park might work well in Jered Weaver's favor. In fact, he got shelled, giving up five earned runs over five innings. Luckily for the Bees, the Beavers didn't do any better, with their starter giving up an equal number of hits and runs, though with fewer strikeouts (six for Weaver versus three for Portland's Mario Ramos).
Nate Bland pitched a pair of scoreless innings sans strikeouts or hits (though he did give up a walk); it took three more Bees pitchers to complete the win, with Jonathan Rouwenhorst getting the save and the game's last out. Impressively, the Salt Lake crew held Terrmel Sledge (demoted due to general suckiness, if I remember correctly), the recently hot Justin Leone, and Jack "Rhymes With 'Bust'" Cust hitless over 12 at bats.
But if I'm going to say anything nice about any Salt Lake player, it has to be Dallas McPherson, who not only went 3-4 with — gasp! — a walk, but came up with a game-winning solo home run in the tenth, and doubled twice as well. Kendry Morales and Nick Gorneault also homered in the game.
Eylward: 2-4, 1 HR, 2 RBI
Wilson: 1-4, 1 K
Aspito: 1-4, 1 HR, 1 RBI
Rodland: 2-3, 1 BB
Rodriguez, R: 6.0 IP, 4 ER, 6 H, 3 K, 2 BB, 3 HR, 6.00 ERA
Buckley: 2.0 IP, 0 ER, 2 H, 2 K, 0 BB, 3.29 ERA
Zimmermann: (L, 0-2) (in relief), 1.2 IP, 1 ER, 3 H, 0 K, 1 BB, 1 HR, 10.38 ERA
I guess it's a little harder pitching at AA in the Texas League than it is in the Cal League, maybe? Bob Zimmermann is just getting shelled, with a 10.38 ERA, and I wonder how long it will be before he either (a) rights the ship, or (b) gets sent back down to Rancho.
A disappointing night for Wood at the plate, but at least he didn't have three or four strikeouts. Eylward and Aspito were happy, though.
Rodriguez, S: 1-4, 1 2B, 1 RBI
Collins: 2-3, 1 RBI
Toussaint: 1-4
Johnson: 1-4, 1 HR, 1 RBI
Rodriguez: 5.0 IP, 2 ER, 2.57 ERA
Torres: (W, 1-0) (in relief), 2.0 IP, 0 ER, 1 H, 3 K, 0 BB, 2.08 ERA
DeLoizaga-Carney: 2.0 IP, 0 ER, 0 H, 2 K, 0 BB, 4.63 ERA
Multiplicity, Or, Good Grief, Not Another Francisco Rodriguez: I have absolutely no idea where he came from, but there appears to be a second Francisco Rodriguez in the Angels system and he's starting for the Quakes. And, he pitched a pretty good game, one that ended in 2:13 instead of yesterday's 4:20, the Quakes' longest game of the year. Sean Rodriguez drove in the final, winning run of the game on a two-out double. Joe Torres, apparently converted to relief, pitched a scoreless pair of innings, and there's another guy I should look into adding to my watch list.
Madrigal: 1-4, 2 K
Shearer: (L, 0-2), 6.0 IP, 4 ER, 7 H, 4 K, 3 BB, 3.66 ERA
Howell: 2.0 IP, 0 ER, 0 H, 2 K, 0 BB, 1.69 ERA
Stinky. Pitching.
Valdez: 4-5, 1 RBI
Guzman, J: 1-3, 1 BB
Loney: 0-4
Martin, R: 1-3, 1 BB
Young, D: 0-4, 2 K
Garcia: 2-4
Sele: (W, 3-0), 7.2 IP, 0 ER, 7 H, 7 K, 2 BB, 2.92 ERA
Aaron Sele, jockying for a spot on the big club. It likely won't work, Aaron, but thanks for helping out the 51's.
Abreu: 1-4, 1 RBI
Kemp: 2-3, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K
LaRoche: 1-4, 1 K
Brazell: 2-4, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 K
Ruggiano, J: 2-4, 2 RBI, 1 K
Zapp: 1-4, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 2 K
Ruan: 2-4
Hanrahan: (W, 2-1), 6.0 IP, 2 ER, 5 H, 4 K, 1 BB, 1 HR, 2.82 ERA
A.J. Zapp's homer came in the second inning, and what does it say for a first base prospect if he's batting seventh? Good thing for him he hit with some power, because so far, he's not hitting for average. Joel Hanrahan got the win in a well-pitched (for the Suns, anyway) game. Alvis Ojeda got the save; keep an eye on this one, he has only two earned runs in 9.1 IP, but with 11 strikeouts. The Suns have now won six straight, while last year's nemeses, the Barons, have lost six straight.
Dewitt: 0-4, 1 BB, 1 K
Paul, X: 1-4, 1 K
Denker, T: 2-4, 2 RBI
Hoffmann: 1-4, 1 2B, 1 K
Elbert: 4.0 IP, 1 ER, 3 H, 5 K, 2 BB, 1.89 ERA
Hammes: (W, 1-0) (in relief), 4.0 IP, 0 ER, 1 H, 3 K, 0 BB, 3.14 ERA
I'm not sure why Elbert only threw four innings; maybe it's the battery system of pitching rotation construction sometimes used in the minors.
Pedroza: 2-3, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 BB
Rivera: 0-3, 1 K
Alvarez: (L, 0-3), 5.0 IP, 0 ER, 4 H, 7 K, 2 BB, 4.60 ERA
Wade: 3.0 IP, 2 ER, 5 H, 4 K, 0 BB, 5.73 ERA
You do realize he's hitting 311/373/581, right?
7 for 22 with 2 BB's
3 doubles
1 triple
2 home runs
Still too many strikeouts (sigh), but with solid production, maybe we can live with that.
Let's hope he continues his improvement after his horrific first week.
