A Conversation: Padres 11, Dodgers 5
Rob: picks up cellphone and calls Jen, a Padres fan. The phone rings, and picks up.
Rob: Are you watching this?
Jen: laughing maniacally. Oh, yeah!
Rob: So, I heard your boys were having trouble hitting?
Jen: Heh.
Rob: Welcome to the Dodgers bullpen.
Jen: No, thank you. Jerry Coleman was saying that they were hoping to get into that before the game was over. Outside of — Baez? Does that sound right? — there's not much there.
Rob: Yeah. You're welcome. Franquelis Osoria is Spanish for "run donor", Gagné and Brazoban are on the DL, and they traded their best middle reliever for Jae Seo. While I normally support trades of relievers for starters, it opened up a hole in the bullpen.
Jen: I see. I was over here screaming at Bochy for pulling out Chris Young in the seventh.
Khalil Greene singles.
Rob: And then, a miracle, er, the Los Angeles relief corps.
Adrian Gonzalez GIDPs.
Jen: Something like that. They went through a streak last week when they couldn't hit anything.
Josh Barfield doubles.
Rob: Say, how are you liking that Barfield kid?
Jen: Oh, he's great. Nobody else can hit, but he's still gettin' 'em to sink in. You know that was only his third home run this year?
Geoff Blum singles, driving in Barfield. Padres 10, Dodgers 4.
Rob: laughs No, I didn't. Man, what a trainwreck.
Dave Roberts and Mike Cameron both single, with Cameron driving in Blum. Padres 11, Dodgers 4.
Jen: It's kind of like a merry-go-round out there.
Rob: Yeah, you see a lot of games like that when the Angels offense is clicking. Which, it isn't, either.
Brian Giles lines out.
Jen: The Padres' new uniforms are so cool. But now that they're selling retro gear, you see everyone wearing those awful old brown-and-yellow uniforms everywhere. And most of the people wearing them weren't even around when the team wore them.
Rob: I know what you mean. Periwinkle.
Jen: Man, the 70's sucked.
Rob: Try, the 90's. The Angels used to have periwinkle blue unis back then.
Jen: Seriously? I guess I don't watch any American League games.
Dewon Brazelton ascends the mound, along with his 10.69 ERA.
Jen: I was thinking about calling you guys but I didn't want to sound like I was rubbing it in.
Rob: Oh, no worries. We know you better than that.
Jen: Now, here's your boys' big chance to get back in the game. God, Brazelton's awful. Ugh. Gave up nine runs once.
Jeff Kent and Bill Mueller bounce out to third.
Rob: Not really. You haven't seen how adept these guys are at not hitting.
Andre Ethier homers. Padres 11, Dodgers 5.
Rob: Woo hoo! That's his first major league homer!
Jen: Cool.
Rob: Ethier's the guy we got from the A's for Milton Bradley. I'm always kind of skeptical of players the A's give up in trade, because they have such a rep for rooking the other teams. Who can forget the A's injecting themselves into the Carlos Beltran trade, f'r chrissakes, and leaving Kansas City with the wet bag containing Mark Teahen? But it's nice to see Ethier do well.
Jen: Good night for the boys, though.
Rob: Yeah. Your boys, anyway. Well, we'll see you sometime after we get back from Arkansas.
Helen: Hey! Can I talk to her?
Rob: Oh, yeah, Helen wants to chat, too. See ya.
Jen: 'Bye.
