News
- Of course, Andre Ethier hit his first major league home run in today's game. Ricky Ledee's groin muscle was apparently torn off the bone, and so Ethier will, in all likelihood, have plenty of opportunities to hit more.
- Kinda sorta prospectily-related: The Dodgers are not committing to giving Odalis Perez his next rotation turn. This might mean the club will call up Chad Billingsley, but more likely it apparently means Aaron Sele will get the call. Perez, who has never pitched in relief in his five-year-career with the Dodgers, would get demoted to the bullpen. Perez is currently in the Dominican, visiting his sick mother.
- Baseball America had an unhappy note about former Dodger prospect, Chuck Tiffany:
Devil Rays lefthander Chuck Tiffany is ailing at Double-A Montgomery. Tiffany, who was acquired from the Dodgers along with righthander Edwin Jackson in the Danys Baez deal, has had some shoulder soreness and while he hasn't gone on the disabled list, the club is being cautious with the 21-year-old lefty. Tiffany hasn't gone more than 4 2/3 innings in any of his four starts this year, and the club skipped his turn in the rotation after an April 19 loss to Huntsville. He lasted just 3 2/3 innings in that start, and allowed five runs on seven hits--two of them home runs. In his next start 10 days later, the results were worse. The second-round pick in 2003 allowed seven earned runs on eight hits and walked six over 3 1/3 innings. Overall, Tiffany is 0-2, 6.89 with a 12-14 strikeout-walk ratio in 16 innings...

2006-05-03: Las Vegas 4, Salt Lake 3 #
Aybar, E: 3-4, 1 K
Willits, R: 1-3, 1 3B, 1 RBI, 1 K
Murphy: 1-3, 1 RBI, 1 K
Morales: 0-4, 2 K
Gorneault: 1-4, 1 2B, 1 K
Specht: 1-3, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 K
Shell: 7.0 IP, 2 ER, 5 H, 3 K, 1 BB, 1 HR, 2.00 ERA
Jones: (BS, 5)(L, 1-3) (in relief), 2.0 IP, 2 ER, 3 H, 0 K, 1 BB, 7.11 ERA
I caught the tail end of this one, and was immediately reminded of why Greg Jones has fallen off any prospect lists he might have been in. Despite the sour note at the end for the Bees, Steven Shell had a good outing. Once again, notable for his absence from the playing field was Dallas McPherson, apparently having more trouble with injuries; this time, it's an oblique strain that's had him sidelined for three straight games. He did take batting practice prior to the game, however.

2006-05-03: Arkansas did not play
Which was probably just as well, the way
they've been playing: the Travs are 2-4 over the last week. Travelerocity
has an excellent preview of the upcoming series against Mariners'
Texas League affiliate San Antonio, which should feature one of the
game's top catching prospects in former USC Trojan Jeff Clement.

Sandoval, F: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 K
Rodriguez, S: 1-3
Collins: 2-4, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 1 K

Toussaint: 1-4, 2 K
Leahy: 2-4, 2 RBI
Green: 5.2 IP, 4 ER, 14 H, 3 K, 2 BB, 3.51 ERA
DeLoizaga-Carney: (W, 1-1) (in relief), 2.1 IP, 0 ER, 0 H, 3 K, 1 BB, 4.58 ERA
Jepsen: 1.0 IP, 0 ER, 0 H, 2 K, 0 BB, 3.86 ERA
Does Mike's sudden membership in the catcher-of-the-month club strike you as something like Henry VIII's way with women? I suppose Michael Collins then rates third on the depth chart, going downhill from Jeff Mathis to Mike Napoli, with maybe Bobby Wilson somewhere in the mix as well. Collins provided three of the four runs in the seventh inning that carried the day for the Quakes.

An underwhelming outing for Nick Green, who got badly nicked himself for four earned runs. DeLoizaga-Carney, whom I hope to God never appears in a major league uniform (if only because his name is unbelievably long), somehow got the win.

2006-05-03: Orem did not play
Just a reminder, the complex leagues
don't start their seasons until June.

A magnificent outing for Billingsley, who, according to the reports above, is about to get robbed of an opportunity to shine at the major league level.

Won in the 10th by Craig Brazell's solo homer, Matt Kemp continues to show us why he ought to be promoted to Las Vegas. Decent outing by Orenduff, too.

Bruce: 2-4, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 2 K

Akin: (H, 4)(L, 1-3) (in relief), 1.1 IP, 2 ER, 1 H, 3 K, 3 BB, 1.56 ERA
The Daytona Cubs scored all five of their runs in the eighth, which made a comeback sort of difficult. Matt Merricks sure can strike 'em out (12.60 K/9), and he's having an exceptional year as far as command is concerned (4.38 K/BB), but he's gotta control his home runs (three in 25 IP).
