Kids' Play: Dodgers 6, Giants 1

This just in: Barry is no longer the Decider. Oh, sure, they yell "pitch to Barry" after the first ball any pitcher throws — it happened in a game against the Cubs earlier this week on a 1-2 count — but he looks terrible. Joe Beimel flummoxed him twice. And, he looked none-too-healthy when he tried to field what should have been a long single off Nomar's bat, and turned it into a double when he — creak! — seemingly took forever to p-a-i-n-f-u-l-l-y bend over and retrieve the ball to throw it back in. And again, backing up Steve Finley on a routine Willy Aybar flyball, the Dodgers instead collected another run. Terrible doesn't begin to describe it.

Rafael Furcal let one sail over Nomar's head, and was surprisingly atrocious on defense most of the night. But the Dodgers pitching held up, though it was clear Penny once again didn't have his best stuff with him; indeed, he left the game early with a stiff back. Beimel gave up the Giants' only run on a Pedro Feliz homer, but the best performance of the night in some ways was Takashi Saito's. Saito, who's had some rough outings lately, came right back and smartly, too, with a four-out, three-strikeout night. Once again, the guys the Dodgers need to be functional, Lofton, Garciaparra, and Kent, are all working, and if J.D. Drew goes 0-5, we can finally forgive him, given how long he was the only bat working for so long earlier in the season. Not to mention, the kids are all right.
