- Peter Gammons ($$)
has an interesting if by now sadly repetitious story regarding holdout
Luke Hochevar. One of Hochevar's teammates on the Fort Worth
Cats is Matt Harrington, starting his fourth season as a Cat.
Formerly a top-ten pick (the Rockies offered him $4.1 million as a
seventh-overall pick in the 2000 draft), he changed agents from
Tommy Tanzer to Scott Boras, and held out three more years. As
such, he's now eligible to be signed by any club:
In 2005, he finally went undrafted and was -- and still is -- free to sign with any major-league team.
It neatly mirrors the situation with the Angels and Jered Weaver; Weaver, at least, wised up and took the offer before it was permanently off the table. That hasn't happened. He is entering his fourth season with Fort Worth, for whom he has pitched in 62 games with a 10-11 record and 4.00 ERA.
"Harrington was throwing 84-85," said the executive. "His stuff wasn't close to what it was six years ago. It was very sad."
- Eric Gagné is heading to Las Vegas for a rehab stint.
- There was a discussion-within-a-discussion in this
Inside The Dodgers comments thread about the Dodgers
possibly leaving Vero behind and moving to new digs in Arizona.
One of the points brought up contra a move is how many of
the Dodgers' farm clubs are in the Southeast. While this is true,
the fact also is that the Dodgers' AAA farm team used to be in
Albuquerque, and some of those teams could be moved to places
further west. (For instance, there's talk the AA Texas
League might, through relocation or addition, get a team in
Fayetteville, Arkansas.)
But all that aside, I thought it might be interesting to note in passing the condition of the new Albuquerque ballpark, home to the Isotopes, the Marlins' AAA franchise.

Bulger: 0.1 IP, 0 ER, 0 H, 0 K, 0 BB, 1.06 ERA
And you know what? It's still a quality start. Good for Moseley. Alejandro Prieto and Paul Phillips broke up the 2-2 tie in the eighth with a sac fly and an RBI single. Salt Lake made four errors in an ugly defensive game; only one of the runs was unearned, though all were against Moseley.

The good guys won again, with James Loney and Delwyn Young both having multi-hit nights. Kuo continues to scare me; too many hits. The 51's were bailed out by two GIDPs from the Redbirds.

Muegge: (W, 3-4), 7.0 IP, 0 ER, 5 H, 6 K, 1 BB, 4.08 ERA
The Suns strung together some timely hits, and a solid outing by Danny Muegge to collect a win. Does anybody remember Wilkin Ruan? He used to be a 51, and for about 21 games in 2003 when things looked desperate, he got his chance in the Show, and flopped. He got into the Kansas City organization for a couple years, and now here he is back in a Dodgers system uniform.

Jason Mooneyham, a starter for Chapman University, has advanced a level and continues to have good contact skills, though he's not getting regular play as a starting 1B; he seems to be a reserve type, his .444 average notwithstanding. The Catfish got the win in the four-run fifth; David Pfeiffer got the three-inning save.
