2006-05-02: Las Vegas 5, Salt Lake 9 #
Aybar, E: 0-4, 1 BB
Willits, R: 1-4, 2 RBI, 1 BB, 2 K
Murphy: 2-4, 1 RBI, 1 K
Morales: 2-4, 1 3B, 2 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K
Gorneault: 2-4, 2 2B, 1 RBI
Napoli, M: 1-4, 1 2B, 1 RBI
Specht: 2-4, 1 RBI
Pavkovich: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 K
Saunders: (W, 3-1), 6.0 IP, 1 ER, 7 H, 2 K, 3 BB, 1 HR, 3.57 ERA
Bland: 1.1 IP, 3 ER, 5 H, 2 K, 2 BB, 1 HR, 5.40 ERA
Big innings are going around, just like they are for the parent clubs of these two organizations. In this case, a six-run sixth for Salt Lake, begun and ended by Nick Gorneault, was enough to take the game. Las Vegas made it closer with rallies in the eighth and ninth, though. Kendry Morales has a nice little five-game hitting streak going, while Brian Specht snapped a five-game hitless skid. Dallas McPherson spends another day on the bench, possibly because of Sunday's fireworks.

A further note about yesterday's 51's/Bees contest: Nick Gorneault scored his 400th professional run in the contest.

Peel, A: 1-4, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 2 K
Wood: 0-4, 1 K
Brown: 1-3, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 BB
Eylward: 2-4, 2 HR, 2 RBI
Wilson: 1-4, 1 2B, 3 K
Rodland: 1-2, 2 BB
Davidson: (W, 1-2), 8.0 IP, 2 ER, 6 H, 3 K, 0 BB, 1 HR, 3.72 ERA
The Travs won, but mainly on the strength of homers from Aaron Peel, Matt Brown, and a pair from Mike Eylward rather than Brandon Wood, who now has more strikeouts (38) than hits (28), and leads the team in the K category (but also &mdash by just one — in homers). Jamie Moyer-in-training Dan Davidson continues to somehow make outs.

Rodriguez, S: 1-4, 1 2B, 1 K
Lopez: 1-3, 1 K
Posey: (L, 1-2), 3.0 IP, 5 ER, 6 H, 2 K, 2 BB, 1 HR, 6.75 ERA
Torres: 1.1 IP, 0 ER, 1 H, 3 K, 1 BB, 4.85 ERA
Jepsen: 1.0 IP, 1 ER, 2 H, 0 K, 0 BB, 4.22 ERA
A record like Micah Posey's would seem to indicate a lot of injury trouble. A 2001 draftee, he's never pitched more than 120 innings in a single year, and last year he only got in 25.1 between AZL and Rancho. Posey got blasted early on and never recovered. Rancho's offense was stymied by Ryan Mattheus, whose 2006 stats indicate he's learned something (at least, in small sample sizes); he's striking out a batter an inning so far.

Fun factoid: the manager for opponent Modesto Nuts is former Dodger and Chan Ho Park caddy, Chad Kreuter; the team's batting coach is former Angel Glenallen Hill.

Statia: 2-5
Wipke: 2-4, 1 K
Trumbo: 1-4, 1 K
Madrigal: 0-4, 1 K
Infante: 0-2, 2 BB, 2 K
Mendoza: 7.0 IP, 0 ER, 2 H, 8 K, 1 BB, 2.95 ERA
Howell: (L, 1-2) (in relief), 2.1 IP, 3 ER, 3 H, 3 K, 0 BB, 2 HR, 5.17 ERA
Didjurgis: 0.2 IP, 0 ER, 0 H, 0 K, 0 BB, 0.55 ERA
Does Chris Howell exist to give wins to the other team? Probably not ("if Chris Howell did not exist, would the Silver Hawks have had to invent him?"), but Tommy Mendoza's brilliant seven inning, 8 K night went for naught as Howell coughed up three earned runs in the top of the 10th. Didjurgis made the last two outs of the game for the Kernels, reducing his ERA to a microscopic 0.55 ERA. Magic Eight Ball Says: promotion before the All Star Break.

Eric Stults, organizational fodder. Russ Martin had a very nice offensive night, offsetting the error that helped extend the brutal sixth inning.

"Where is LaRoche?" Ken Gurnick recently answered a question why LaRoche was repeating AA; the answer is worth repeating:
There was much internal debate over the winter whether LaRoche was ready to make the jump to the Major Leagues after his breakout 2005 season, in which he started at Class A Vero Beach and never slowed down after a midseason promotion to Double-A. He was named the organization's position player of the year, combining for 30 home runs and 94 RBIs and helped his club win the Arizona Fall League title. General manager Ned Colletti erred on the side of caution, signing free agent Bill Mueller to fill the black hole left by Adrian Beltre's departure, clearly the right move. Meanwhile, LaRoche's first opportunity to impress the new regime did not go very well, as he hit .250. He had one memorable game, driving in six runs in one inning with a grand slam and two-run single. He not only didn't make the Major League team, he was sent back to Jacksonville, where he's batting .226 and has made five errors. He's still talented and only 22-years-old.
