News
- Dioner Navarro was placed on the 15-day DL and Russell Martin got the callup from Las Vegas. Martin answered the call by going 2-4 and driving in a pair of runs in yesterday's contest, prompting the delivery of a bottle of Dom Perignon to his locker.
- No makeup date has been announced for the rained out 51's/Bees contest on May 4.
- The Royals sent Mark Teahen to AAA Omaha and asked perennial thrower Joe Mays whether he'd accept a demotion to that club as well. I mentioned him in Wednesday's Padres game recap as the blunt end of a hammer Allard Baird brought down on the Royals — and himself. Joe Posnanski in the Kansas City Star recently wrote a column enumerating the manifold problems that club has, using Teahen as an example of the club's mistakes:
The Royals aren't just bad, they're infuriating. John Buck — a key element in the Carlos Beltran trade — actually had a passed ball on a pitchout the other day. First time I've seen that one. And it reminds you that the Beltran trade, looking back, was the death knell for this organization. The Royals had one great player to trade, one of the best players in the game, and in exchange they got Buck, Mark Teahen and Mike Wood. A baseball executive e-mailed me that day to say the trade was a fiasco, a breathtakingly dumb move by general manager Allard Baird. I held out hope that the executive was wrong.
And people wonder why I think Andre Ethier is a similarly insignificant player. Remember, Mike Edwards was a River Cat, too.He wasn't wrong. To this point, Buck and Teahen — the two key elements to the deal — are hitting a combined .190 with three times more errors than home runs.
- Tony Jackson says that instead of making Willy Aybar upset at being passed over for the big club after a brief stint at Los Angeles last year, he's rededicated ($$) to coming back:
"He took it like a professional," Dodgers coach Manny Mota said. "He knew we had a good guy here in Bill Mueller, and he knew he could still continue to improve in the minor leagues by getting more at-bats, playing more in the field, being more prepared and being more mature.
"I believe that experience of playing with us last year will be huge for him."
- The Marlins returned Rule 5 draftee lefty Michael Megrew.
- "The Angels ranked last in the major leagues in walks," snarks Bill Shaikin in Baseball America, "so Howie Kendrick should fit right in."
"You hear things every now and then about walking more, but I like to hit," Kendrick said. "I like to swing early in the count if it's there, and I guess I really don't miss too much. I'm not going up to the plate to walk."
Kendrick went 1-2 — with a walk — in yesterday's contest. - One thing I'm not too good at keeping up with is intra-minor-league promotions and demotions. Travelerocity mentions that because of the Tommy Murphy promotion, Mike Eylward got a promotion to Salt Lake. They also mention something of a little disappointment to me, the absence of Jeff Clement from the Missions lineup, due to a sore elbow.
- Update: The Angels announced their organizational players of the month, and ex-Trav, current Bee Mike Eylward (offensive), RHP Rafael Rodriguez (pitcher), and Tommy Murphy (defensive) all received the honor.
- Similarly, the Dodgers announced their players of the month: pitcher Chad Billingsley and 3B Willy Aybar.
Scores
Willits, R: 2-3, 3 BB
Rivera: 4-5, 2 2B, 1 HR, 6 RBI, 1 BB
Gorneault: 2-5, 1 3B, 3 RBI, 1 BB
McPherson: 1-5, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 2 K
Mathis, J: 2-4, 1 2B, 2 RBI, 1 BB
Morales: 2-5, 1 K
Eylward: 2-4, 1 2B, 2 RBI, 1 K
Olenberger: (W, 1-0), 5.0 IP, 1 ER, 4 H, 1 K, 1 BB, 1 HR, 4.02 ERA
Bulger: 1.0 IP, 0 ER, 1 H, 3 K, 0 BB, 0.61 ERA
Cesar Jimenez posted good numbers at lower levels in the minors, but not yesterday, getting creamed by the Bees after a brief tour that mostly baffled AA batters. Three of Juan Rivera's four hits went for extra bases, including a home run. With Jason Bulger continuing to post these kinds of numbers at Salt Lake, and Esteban Yan blowing up in yesterday's game against the Blue Jays, one has to wonder just how much longer they can keep the kid on the farm...
Day: 2-5, 1 2B, 1 K
Wood: 1-5, 2 RBI
Brown: 2-4, 1 K
Wilson: 1-4, 1 RBI, 1 K
Porter: 3-4, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 1 K
Rodriguez, R: 6.0 IP, 3 ER, 7 H, 4 K, 2 BB, 1 HR, 10.38 ERA
Buckley: (BS, 1)(W, 1-1) (in relief), 2.0 IP, 0 ER, 2 H, 1 K, 3 BB, 2.29 ERA
Rafael Rodriguez settled down — finally — and posted a quality start at AA. It was a lot better than it looked here; he left the game with two on in the seventh, a questionable move considering Rodriguez started to labor in the sixth, but manager Tyrone Boykin decided he'd take his chances with another inning from Rodriguez rather than using his notoriously shaky bullpen. Boykin, who had managed Rodriguez at single-A Rancho last year, said (RR) "here that's the best he's been".
Travelerocity had speculated recently that Brandon Wood will likely stay all year at Arkansas, and last night provided an examply of why. In the first inning, Wood fumbled a Michael Garciaparra grounder behind second that slipped out of his glove and squirted over his head behind him; by the time he recovered he had no play, an outcome that was generously charged as an infield single rather than E6. So his defense is a little shaky, though not overly so. He also made a number of routine plays cleanly, and got an RBI in five at bats, though the numbers were somewhat misleading. All his outs but one were hard hit, and one of his flyball outs was made at the warning track.
But so far as relief pitching, Tim Bittner, part of the return on the Scott Schoeneweis trade, still hasn't figured it out. This is his third tour of AA, and he's not improving, if last night's implosion is any indication. Bittner was charged with three earned runs without making a single out, loading the bases when Boykin decided to bring in his smokejumper, Allen Buckley (2006 stats). The net effect was to tie the game, but Aaron Peel's solo blast into the right field fence won the game, leaving Aussie Richard Thompson, who spent the last three years at Rancho, to get the save. According to Harold and Nancy, the folks sitting ahead of us at the game, the Travs don't currently have a designated closer; maybe tonight's game changed that.
Collins: 2-4, 1 RBI, 2 K
Lopez: 0-3, 1 BB, 1 K
Toussaint: 0-3, 1 BB, 3 K
Sutton: 2-3, 1 BB
Arredondo: (L, 1-1), 6.0 IP, 3 ER, 5 H, 9 K, 1 BB, 1 HR, 2.59 ERA
Torres: 1.0 IP, 0 ER, 0 H, 1 K, 0 BB, 4.50 ERA
No run support equals no win for the unfortunate Jose Arredondo, who pitched a pretty good game with nine K's and only one earned run. If he can keep doing this, maybe the Travs will get some additional help on the mound. Good outings for Joe Torres and Michael Collins, too.
Trumbo: 0-3, 1 BB, 1 K
Schlichting: 2-3, 1 2B
Morris: 2-4, 1 HR, 3 RBI
Madrigal: 1-3, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K
Mattison: (L, 1-2) (in relief), 1.0 IP, 2 ER, 2 H, 0 K, 0 BB, 3.29 ERA
Trumbo reverts to his old self.
Guzman, J: 0-4, 2 RBI
Loney: 1-5, 2 RBI
Truby: 0-2, 2 BB, 1 K
Alvarez, N: 2-2, 1 RBI
Houlton: (L, 0-4), 4.1 IP, 10 ER, 9 H, 2 K, 2 BB, 4 HR, 5.46 ERA
Simmons: 2.0 IP, 0 ER, 0 H, 2 K, 3 BB, 5.68 ERA
Guess that curveball doesn't work at elevation. Houlton got pasted for ten earned runs... ouch. Delwyn Young at least tried to make up for it with a 4-5 night.
Kemp: 3-6, 1 K
LaRoche: 1-5, 2 BB, 1 K
Ruggiano, J: 2-5, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 1 BB, 2 K
Hu: 0-4, 1 RBI, 2 BB
Raglani: 0-4, 2 BB
Hanrahan: 2.0 IP, 2 ER, 1 H, 3 K, 3 BB, 3.86 ERA
Alvarez, C: 4.0 IP, 0 ER, 3 H, 4 K, 2 BB, 4.20 ERA
Miller: (BS, 1), 3.0 IP, 2 ER,3 H, 2 K, 2 BB, 1.00 ERA
Alexander: 2.0 IP, 0 ER, 1 H, 2 K, 1 BB, 0.00 ERA
Ellis: (L, 0-1) (in relief), 2.1 IP, 1 ER, 4 H, 1 K, 2 BB, 3.86 ERA
Greg Miller in relief... considering his shoulder problems, not such a bad idea, but it didn't work out too well tonight. Meantime, Mark Alexander has 19 K's, 13 IP, and no earned runs. A 14-inning marathon.
Dewitt: 2-5, 1 HR, 2 RBI
Denker, T: 0-3, 2 RBI
Paul, X: 1-5, 1 K
Westervelt: 2-3, 1 BB
Hoffmann: 1-3, 1 BB, 1 K
Elbert: (W, 1-3), 6.0 IP, 3 ER, 7 H, 5 K, 3 BB, 2.64 ERA
Blake Dewitt continues to pressure the Dodgers to move him up. A quality start for Scott Elbert.
Pedroza: 1-5, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 3 K
Locke: 2-4, 1 RBI, 1 K
Sutherland: 2-4
Harper: 3-4, 1 RBI, 1 K
Wade: (W, 1-0), 5.0 IP, 1 ER, 2 H, 2 K, 1 BB, 3.79 ERA
Rodriguez, J: 3.0 IP, 0 ER, 0 H, 4 K, 0 BB, 9.16 ERA
