Minor League Scorebook

News

Extra innings are going around: The longest Sally League game in history ended with Lakewood taking it 8-7 on a bases-loaded walk, ending a 22-inning marathon.

Scores

2006-05-07: Tacoma 2, Salt Lake 8 #
Willits, R: 1-4, 1 2B, 2 RBI, 1 K
Gorneault: 1-4, 1 2B
McPherson: 2-4, 2 HR, 2 RBI
Mathis, J: 1-4, 2 K
Morales: 2-4
Budde: 2-3, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K
Smith, C: 3-4, 2 2B, 2 RBI
Moseley: (W, 5-1), 9.0 IP, 2 ER, 5 H, 6 K, 2 BB, 1 HR, 2.92 ERA
Which is more incredible: D-Mac homering twice and failing to strike out, or Dustin Moseley having a complete game five-hitter at elevation? Moseley's complete game was the first in two years at Salt Lake; Moseley is also the first PCL pitcher to get to five wins. McPherson has homered in four straight games, and leads Salt Lake with eight dingers.
2006-05-07: Corpus Christi 3, Arkansas 8 #
Bacon: 2-5, 1 K
Wood: 0-4, 1 K
Aspito: 3-4, 1 HR, 3 RBI
Pali: 2-4
Porter: 2-4, 1 2B, 2 RBI
Rodland: 2-4, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 K
Smith, J: (W, 3-1), 6.2 IP, 2 ER, 7 H, 5 K, 1 BB, 4.28 ERA
3-1 Jesse Smith pretty much dominated the Corpus Christi lineup, while Jason Aspito provided a 3-run homer and went 3-4, and Eric Rodland homered and drove in two to provide much of the team's offensive fireworks. Once again, Brandon Wood's line wasn't reflective of the kind of at bats he's having; his strikeout was a tough pitch that, had he not swung at it, might have been called a ball. He's hitting the ball hard, though, and I expect he'll start squaring up more pitches given another month or two.
2006-05-07: Rancho Cucamonga 4, Bakersfield 3 #
Rodriguez, S: 0-5, 2 K
Collins: 3-6
Lopez: 2-5, 1 RBI, 1 BB
Sandoval, F: 2-4, 1 RBI, 2 BB, 1 K
Posey: 6.0 IP, 1 ER, 5.47 ERA
Hawkins: (W, 1-1) (in relief), 2.0 IP, 0 ER, 0 H, 1 K, 0 BB, 8.44 ERA
This one goes to 13: Micah Freakin' Posey survived six innings without recording a strikeout, walked two, and gave up five hits and only surrendered a pair of runs. This one went to 13 innings, won on Freddy Sandoval's RBI single. Michael Collins batted cleanup, got on base three times, and didn't score a single run.
2006-05-07: Wisconsin 5, Cedar Rapids 6 #
Morris: 3-4, 1 3B, 1 HR, 2 RBI
Wipke: 2-4, 1 RBI
Schlichting: 0-2, 2 BB
Martinez: 2-4, 1 RBI, 2 K
Mosebach: (W, 3-0), 6.0 IP, 2 ER, 8 H, 4 K, 1 BB, 1.77 ERA
Aldridge: 1.2 IP, 1 ER, 2 H, 2 K, 1 BB, 5.27 ERA
Dallas Morris hit a double short of the cycle; the Kernels won this game despite being outhit by the Timber Rattlers.
2006-05-07: AZL Angels did not play
2006-05-07: Orem did not play
2006-05-07: Las Vegas 4, Colorado Springs 2 #
Aybar: 2-4, 1 HR, 1 RBI
Guzman, J: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 K
Young, D: 2-3, 1 2B, 1 BB, 1 K
Loney: 1-3, 1 RBI, 1 BB
Garcia: 0-2, 1 RBI, 2 BB, 1 K
Kuo: 0-1, 1 K
Juarez: (W, 2-2), 6.0 IP, 2 ER, 5 H, 3 K, 2 BB, 3.56 ERA
Carter: 1.2 IP, 0 ER, 1 H, 2 K, 2 BB, 0.00 ERA
Kuo: 1.1 IP, 0 ER, 1 H, 1 K, 0 BB, 2.70 ERA
Nothing like outpitching the Sky Sox at elevation. Too bad it wasn't Chad Billingsley on the mound. Nice offensive night for Willy Aybar, too. The game was decided on a pair of bases-loaded walks to Sergio Garcia and Edwin Bellorin in the top of the ninth that broke a 2-2 tie. Kuo recorded his first save of the season for Las Vegas.
2006-05-07: Carolina 11, Jacksonville 0 #
Hu: 1-4, 1 BB
Abreu: 2-5, 1 K
Kemp: 1-5, 1 K
LaRoche: 0-4, 1 K
Raglani: 1-3, 2 K
Muegge: (L, 2-4), 4.0 IP, 5 ER, 7 H, 1 K, 0 BB, 4 HR, 4.81 ERA
Adam Bostick mystified the Suns through five innings, striking out seven and allowing only three hits. Danny Muegge got mugged, giving up five earned runs, as did Jose Diaz.
2006-05-07: Dunedin 5, Vero Beach 3 #
Dewitt: 3-4, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 BB
Dunlap: 1-4, 1 BB, 1 K
Denker, T: 1-4, 1 K
Paul, X: 1-3, 1 BB
Hoffmann: 1-4, 1 2B, 1 K
Johnson, B: (L, 1-1), 7.0 IP, 3 ER, 6 H, 5 K, 0 BB, 3.12 ERA
Blake Dewitt's 3-4 with a homer night was the only good thing to come of this game.
2006-05-07: Columbus 5, Kannapolis 3 #
De Jesus: 0-5, 2 K
Mooneyham: 2-5
Locke: 2-3, 1 BB
Sutherland: 1-2, 1 HR, 4 RBI, 2 BB
Arias, M: 5.2 IP, 2 ER, 3 H, 10 K, 4 BB, 5.12 ERA
Felix: (W, 1-0) (in relief), 3.0 IP, 0 ER, 1 H, 2 K, 0 BB, 4.15 ERA
Columbus scored one run in the fourth through sixth, and then Kannapolis tied it in the bottom of the sixth, leading to three scoreless frames through the ninth. David Sutherland homered with Andrew Locke on base to give the Catfish the lead.
2006-05-07: GCL Dodgers did not play
2006-05-07: Ogden did not play

Comments:
What sort of devil's bargain has been writ to suddenly make the Angels farm this pitching-rich? We suddenly have four starters pitching in the 2's and 3's at Salt Lake? Plus a legitimate closer in Bulger? Huh.

Arredondo with 49 Ks in 31 innings at Rancho. Adenhart, Mendoza, Marek and Mosebach a fantastic four at Cedar Rapids.

And genuine bullpen bucks in Didjurgis, Lynch and Miguel Gonzalez.

Anybody care to share the wealth with Little Rock?

Or howzabout sharing the wealth with some other orgs for a little power on the big club?

Moseley has mostly been lucky so far. I really don't like his lack of strikeouts; he needs to make more batters swing and miss against lower-level opponents before I'd come anywhere close to trusting him in the Show. The same goes for Matt Wilhite and Steven Shell, both of whom are living off ridiculously low WHIPs. Those tend not to be repeatable skills. Didjurgis, on the other hand, dominated his lower level competition at Orem and is having a similar sort of success at Cedar Rapids. On the other hand, you could say the same thing about Rafael Rodriguez, who in making the jump to AA saw a sudden drop in his strikeout rate. On the other hand, Didjurgis was a college pitcher for UOP, and at 24, he's expected to dominate these lower levels quickly. I expect a midseason callup to Rancho for Tim, where, if everything works right, he'll be sent Arkansas at the beginning of 2007.

For all these guys, I'd want to see where they are by the minor league All Star break before making any judgements about their abilities. But the early signs are very encouraging.
