News
- An anonymous scout breaks down Chad Billingsley in Baseball America. Excerpt:
“I mean, what’s not to like?” the scout said. “He was 95 (mph) consistently with two breaking pitches that grade out as above-average or better. His curve has great break and his slider is one of the best I’ve seen this season with hard, late movement down in the zone and he'll throw either one at any time.
“And even though he still has work to do on his changeup--right now it doesn’t have the downward life you’d like and he can get a little caught up with his arm action, but this guy is obviously not a thrower. His changeup is just OK. But he has a great feel to pitch. I know all the hype with (Giants righthander) Matt Cain last year, and I think he’s a hell of a lot better than Cain.
- Mike Bornhorst observes the return of Mike Edwards to the major leagues, this time in a Pirates uniform:
Mike Edwards, 3B, Pittsburgh Pirates: The best thing to be said about Edwards is that he's comfortable. He doesn't hit for a particularly high average, he doesn't steal bases and his power is, at best, marginal. But last season Jim Tracy found a way to get Edwards more than 200 at-bats while both were in Los Angeles. Now that they're reunited in Pittsburgh, will that happen again? Well, the Pirates have a temporary hole at third, which suggests Edwards might find a few more at-bats than he should in the near future. Still, there's not a lot of fantasy value to be had here. Pass.
That's not a fantasy, it's a nightmare. - The minor league season's well underway, and yet we haven't heard from the Bozo descendant, Trevor Bell. Another brief e-mail exchange with Tim Mead indicates he's still in extended spring training with a chance to start at Orem. I would imagine the alternative is starting in Tempe for yet another round of the AZL. Remember, he only pitched eight innings for the AZL Angels last year, so this is hardly unreasonable. I would have to imagine he's well motivated to avoid more of the godawful playing conditions they endure in the complex leagues.

tomorrow against Oklahoma.

Rodland: 2-4, 2 K
Hunter: (L, 1-3), 4.0 IP, 6 ER, 9 H, 1 K, 1 BB, 8.36 ERA
It just doesn't get any better, does it? A four-run fifth knocked the Travs out of this one for good; they got four runs in single innings following, but just couldn't do anything much against BA's 10th-rated prospect in the Cards' system, 5-0 Stuart Pomeranz. Brandon Wood's average has sunk to .262. He's only had two multi-hit games on the month, and has a .214/.267/.393 line over that time.

2006-05-17: Mississippi 3, Jacksonville 10 #
Abreu: 2-5, 1 3B, 1 RBI, 1 K
Kemp: 0-5, 1 K
LaRoche: 0-3, 1 BB, 1 K
Brazell: 3-4, 1 HR, 2 RBI

Raglani: 3-4, 1 HR, 3 RBI
Muegge: (W, 4-4), 5.2 IP, 3 ER, 7 H, 3 K, 1 BB, 2 HR, 4.15 ERA
This time it was the Suns who mugged the other team with Muegge on the mound. A couple of homers, one from Anthony Raglani, and another from Craig Brazell, provided some fireworks as Jacksonville trounced Mississippi. Braves manager Jeff Blauser and Braves' top catching prospect Jarrod Saltalamacchia were both ejected for arguing balls and strikes.

Wright: (W, 1-2) (in relief), 3.0 IP, 0 ER, 2 H, 3 K, 5 BB, 1.96 ERA
Julio Pimentel blanked the Yanks and the Dodgers held on to win it; Chris Westervelt's RBI single in the top of the ninth turned out to be the deciding run, as Tampa rallied for two runs following defensive miscues by the Dodgers that included a passed ball by Chris Westervelt and a throwing error by Carlos Santana.

Castillo: 2.0 IP, 0 ER, 1 H, 2 K, 1 BB, 3.86 ERA
For once, the Catfish had an excuse: they were facing major-league pitchers in the forms of Lance Cormier and Chuck James, making rehab starts for Rome. That excuse lasted only two innings, though. The Catfish' only run scored as the result of a Rome error and an Andrew Locke groundball single.
