News
- Former Dirtbag Jason Vargas was sent down to AAA Albuquerque after struggling to throw strikes this year.
- Does It Really Matter? Dep't: 2005 first-round Dodger draftee Luke Hochevar struck out nine over five innings as a Fort Worth Cat.
- Nick Adenhart is in the number one hole in this week's Hot Sheet from Baseball America:
1. Nick Adenhart, rhp, Angels (Low Class A Cedar Rapids)
This Tommy John survivor appears 100 percent healthy and 100 percent dominant. The 19-year-old righthander has allowed just two earned runs in 21 May innings and is now 6-0, 1.60 on the season with a 54-10 strikeout-walk ratio in 51 innings.3. Matt Kemp, of, Dodgers (Double-A Jacksonville)
Sure, we banged him last week after he allegedly punched Birmingham manager Chris Cron in the face in one of three brawls between the two teams last Saturday. But the Dodgers say Kemp never hit anyone and since then, all he's done is hit baseballs . . . hard. Over his last 24 at-bats, Kemp is hitting .413 with a pair of homers and nine RBIs. - The Angels system has two Pitchers of the Week, but I guarantee you that none of them are at Arkansas. Instead, they're Francisco Rodriguez of Rancho Cucamonga, who threw nine scoreless innnings last week, and Kasey Olenberger at Salt Lake, who threw thirteen.
- I mentioned the Travs' pen because on the other side of that equasion, Corpus Christi Hooks outfielder Hunter Pence dismantled Travs pitching. Blasting five home runs over the last week, four of them against Arkansas, the effort garnered him an Offensive Player of the Week mention. Cedar Rapids outfielder Jordan Renz also took home the award.
- I'm going to provide thumbnail summaries of each teams'
minor league notebooks, so this post will get somewhat
long, and it may turn out to be more work than I want
to do on a regular basis. Here goes:
PCL (Bees)
Over the last week: 5-2, 23-13 overall, 1st place Pacific North Division.
Hot: Curtis Pride (.478), Kendry Morales (.410), Nick Gorneault (.359); Jered Weaver (2-1, 2.79 ERA), Joe Saunders (5-0, leads the league in wins)
Cold: Erick Aybar (.237), Brian Specht (.125), Adam Pavkovich (.043)
PCL (51's)
Over the last week: 5-2, 23-14 overall, 1st place, Pacific South Division.
Hot: Wilson Valdez, Delwyn Young, Jeff Duncan, Sergio Garcia
Cold: Joel Guzman, in a 2-15 slump.Texas League (Travs)
Over the last week: 1-4, 13-20 overall, 3rd place, North Division.
Hot: Greg Porter (9-18) with three steals, Bobby Wilson (6-12). Travs offense leads the league in home runs with 41, but also trails the league in ERA (5.12).
Cold: Matt Wilson, in a 1-20 slump. The entire Travs bullpen, just about.Southern League (Suns)
Over the last week: 5-2, 22-15 overall, 1st place, South Division.
Hot: Chin-Lung Hu, hitting .350 over his last five; Andy LaRoche, Anthony Raglani.
Cold: Justin Ruggiano.Cal League (Quakes)
Over the last week: 4-1, 21-15 overall, tied for 1st place with Inland Empire for the South Division.
Hot: Francisco Rodriguez, including a complete-game shutout (although see below); Sean Rodriguez.
Florida State League (Dodgers)
Over the last week: 1-6, 12-25 overall, 6th (last) place, East Division.
Hot: Cole Bruce (7-16), Blake Dewitt (16-42), Xavier Paul (8-19).
Cold: Pretty much everyone else. The team snapped a seven-game losing streak this week.Midwest League (Kernels)
Over the last week: 2-4, 17-19 overall, 4th place, Western Division.
Hot: Jordan Renz, who won the league Offensive Player of the Week after popping three homers. Nick Adenhart's excellence is now taken for granted, but he pitched seven zero frames in his last start.
Cold: Tommy Mendoza (10.12 ERA); Mark Trumbo (what's new?).Sally League (Catfish)
Over the last week: 4-3, 18-19 overall, 6th place, Southern division.
Hot: Juan Apodaca, Sergio Pedroza, Jason Mooneyham.
Cold: This is a really cold team, with virtually everything going wrong (though the 4-3 would seem to counter that some); the "hot" part above applies to specific games.

Mattison: 1.1 IP, 6 ER, 6 H, 2 K, 0 BB, 1 HR, 6.06 ERA
Ouch. Starter Kelly Shearer blew up for five earned runs and eight runs overall as Cedar Rapids made five errors, leading to four unearned runs crossing the plate. Jordan Renz continued his hot hitting with a 4-5 game that saw him drive in an eye-popping ten runs on three homers, including an eighth-inning grand slam. If the Kernels hadn't needed five pitchers to complete the game, maybe they might have won this one...

Leach: (L, 2-2), 6.0 IP, 4 ER, 5 H, 6 K, 4 BB, 3.21 ERA
An unremarkable game from the unremarkable Catfish. There isn't much talent on this team, but interestingly enough, all but three Catfish had a hit in this game. That was the trouble: they each had one. One of those collecting a hit wasn't the recently hot Jason Mooneyham, but he did have a non-scoring error at first base, his first of the season.
