Minor League Scorebook
News
- Forgotten — perhaps because it wasn't available at "press
time" last night — in yesterday's Minor League Scorebook
news section was Baseball America's weekly Prospect Hot Sheet. This week it contains a bunch of guys from both teams:
2. Nick Adenhart, rhp, Angels (Low Class A Cedar Rapids)
Also, In The Team Photo:
Adenhart is among the minor league pitching leaders in nearly every category, and his stuff has only gotten better now that he's two years removed from Tommy John surgery. His fastball topped out at 95 mph in his last start and his curveball and circle changeup are both plus offerings....
4. Andy LaRoche, 3b, Dodgers (Double-A Jacksonville)
It was only a matter of time before LaRoche started to heat up, like the weather. After hitting just .226 with five extra-base hits through April, LaRoche turned it up last week, hitting .400 (10-for-25) with three bombs....
5. Kendry Morales, 1b, Angels (Triple-A Salt Lake)
With 11 hits in his last five games, Morales is hitting .417 in May. The power is not quite there yet, as he has just 14 extra-base hits on the season while playing his home games in high-altitude Salt Lake.Jered Weaver, rhp, Angels (Triple-A Salt Lake): One earned run allowed in last three starts. Could he be a candidate to replace struggling brother Jeff in the Angels rotations?
I would answer that in the affirmative if, as seems likely to me, the elder Weaver blows up against the slugging Texas lineup. And, don't forget that was written before his complete game shutout on Monday. From the "Not-So-Hot Sheet":Mark Trumbo, 1b, Angels (Low Class A Cedar Rapids) Had four hits last week, upping his average to .179 in 123 at-bats.
"Raw" doesn't begin to describe him. A future bust in the making? Or maybe a position change back to pitching? - Travs centerfielder Aaron Peel has been suspended and fined, essentially for a dustup over a lack of hustle that resulted in a shouting match with manager Ty Boykin; from the Travlerocity comments, it sounds like Peel will miss a week.
- Of course, the biggest news is that of Kendry Morales and his 3-5 debut in the Show. FutureAngels has his first press conference when he appeared in a Quakes uniform for the first time last year, and audio of his first home run in his first professional at bat.
Scores
Specht: 2-5, 1 RBI, 1 K
Kendrick, H: 1-3, 1 2B
Gorneault: 2-5, 1 2B, 1 HR, 1 RBI
Mathis, J: 3-5, 2 RBI
Eylward: 1-5, 1 RBI
Smith, C: 2-3, 1 2B
Bland: 5.0 IP, 2 ER, 7 H, 6 K, 0 BB, 4.26 ERA
Rouwenhorst: (BS, 3)(L, 1-4) (in relief), 0.2 IP, 5 ER, 4 H, 2 K, 1 BB, 7.06 ERA
Salt Lake had this one in the bag until Jonathan Rouwenhorst imploded in a five-run seventh inning rally by New Orleans; Rouwenhorst faced seven batters and only retired two, while giving up five hits and a walk. Chris Bootcheck, now being used out of the bullpen, pitched an inning and a third of scoreless ball. Nick Gorneault homered. The Bees' two errors, one each by shortstop Brian Specht and reliever Nate Bland, didn't contribute to the run total.
Wood: 1-4, 1 2B, 1 K
Wilson: 0-4
Brown: 1-2, 2 BB
Smith, J: (L, 3-4), 6.0 IP, 3 ER, 7 H, 3 K, 1 BB, 1 HR, 4.59 ERA
Armando Galarraga and three other relievers five-hit the downward-spiraling Travs. Jesse Smith posted a quality start but got the loss anyway.
Rodriguez, S: 1-4, 1 K
Collins: 0-4, 3 K
Reilly: 2-4, 1 RBI, 2 K
Lopez: 1-4, 1 K
Toussaint: 1-2, 2 BB, 1 K
Leblanc: 2-3, 1 3B, 1 BB
Posey: (L, 1-4), 6.0 IP, 4 ER, 9 H, 1 K, 3 BB, 2 HR, 4.89 ERA
Not a terrible outing by Micah Posey, but it wasn't enough, as Mavericks starter Billy Buckner became the first six-game winner in the Cal League. Quakes pitchers surrendered three home runs in the loss. Gotta love those two walks by Drew Toussaint.
Albano: 2-5, 1 K
Renz: 1-4, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K
Trumbo: 1-3, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 BB
Martinez: 0-2, 2 BB, 2 K
Mendoza: 6.0 IP, 3 ER, 3 H, 4 K, 5 BB, 5.34 ERA
Didjurgis: (BS, 2)(L, 0-2) (in relief), 0.2 IP, 2 ER, 1 H, 2 K, 2 BB, 3.46 ERA
Mark Trumbo actually had a good night at the plate following all the bad ones. Let's see more of that. Tommy Mendoza got a quality start in the loss; Tim Didjurgis picked up the loss, and his ERA is starting to look very pedestrian.
Loney: 0-3
Juarez: (L, 3-4), 4.1 IP, 5 ER, 6 H, 3 K, 3 BB, 2 HR, 3.97 ERA
Miller: 1.0 IP, 0 ER, 1 H, 1 K, 1 BB, 0.00 ERA
Carrara: 1.0 IP, 0 ER, 0 H, 1 K, 0 BB, 0.90 ERA
Round Rock starter Philip Barzilla — is that some kind of Japanese movie monster that attacks pubs? — one-hit the 51's, retiring 19 in a row, striking out nine over the game. Meantime, Gio Carrara continues his good works, leading to me wondering how many more of those zero frames he can get, who he might end up replacing on the 25-man, and when.
Hu: 0-5
Kemp: 1-4, 2 K
LaRoche: 1-2, 2 BB
Ruggiano, J: 2-3, 1 2B, 1 3B, 1 BB
Raglani: 2-4, 2 K
Cresse: 3-3, 2 HR, 7 RBI, 1 BB
Orenduff, J: 0-3, 2 K
Orenduff, J: (W, 3-2), 7.0 IP, 1 ER, 2 H, 6 K, 1 BB, 3.25 ERA
Hoorelbeke: 2.0 IP, 0 ER, 1 H, 2 K, 0 BB, 0.33 ERA
A good old-fashioned beatdown, highlighted by a three-run ninth against Andy Pratt, who was the second to fall prey to a Brad Cresse three-run jack. Cresse also hit a three-run dinger in the second inning. Justin Orenduff had a very good outing in a row, retiring the first nine batters; you may recall his May 18 game, in which he pitched six consecutive hitless innings. Not to be forgotten: multihit games by Justin Ruggiano, Anthony Raglani, and three times on base for Andy LaRoche.
Hoffmann: 1-4
Dewitt: 1-4
Dunlap: 0-3, 1 RBI, 1 BB
Denker, T: 1-3, 1 2B, 1 RBI
Johnson, B: (L, 2-3), 5.0 IP, 6 ER, 8 H, 2 K, 3 BB, 1 HR, 4.10 ERA
Pimentel: 3.0 IP, 0 ER, 1 H, 4 K, 0 BB, 3.86 ERA
Is it just me? Vero seems to be having a lot of games like this lately, losing by just one run. A poor game by Blake Johnson, who gave up all of Lakeland's six runs, all earned.
Locke: 3-5, 1 3B, 3 RBI
Sutherland: 2-4, 1 2B, 1 BB, 1 K
McDonald: 5.2 IP, 2 ER, 4.34 ERA
Pratt: (W, 2-2) (in relief), 1.2 IP, 0 ER, 2 H, 1 K, 4 BB, 3.86 ERA
Yay! Another Catfish win! Multihit games from Andy Locke and David Sutherland, including a bases-clearing triple by Locke; the pitching was just good enough to get the win.
