Mono... Yeah, That's The Ticket
I've heard of teams resorting to crazy excuses to put guys on the DL, but mono? Maybe he has it, maybe he doesn't, but one thing's for sure: Kotchman's bat sure is tired. Of course, they haven't put Casey on the DL... yet.
Comments:
Conveniently timed to do what? DL him? If he's really not sick, as you imply, you honestly think they're better off having him sit on his ass for a few weeks than going down to Salt Lake? Inventing an excuse for the DL makes no sense at all. And if you're going to lie about something, why make up something stupid like mono?
I honestly think it's about the dumbest thing I've ever heard.

Oh, fooey. Like you've never heard of players developing mystery ailments as an excuse to send them down. Pitchers with swollen ERAs, for instance.
If you're going to send him down, why invent a mystery ailment? They didn't need one for Mathis. It simply doesn't make any sense. It's not like he's out of options and they can't get him down there any other way.
There is absolutely no incentive to lie about this.
There is absolutely no incentive to lie about this.
And why something as embarrassing as mono (the teenage kissing disease)? Why not just say he has back spasms (the standard "injury" NBA teams used prior to this season when they wanted to put a non-performing player on the injured list)?
Of all the things they could come up with...mono?
Especially when they could send him down without any repercussions? If you want him to work out his swing, send him down so he can play; don't unnecessarily restrict his activities by disabling him.
