Pickoff Moves
Today's Birthdays
Dan Bankhead BRO b. 1920, played 1947, 1950-1951, d. 1976-05-02
Chris Cannizzaro LAN b. 1938, played 1972-1973
Darren Dreifort LAN b. 1972, played 1994-2004. Obviously, "played" is too strong a word. Probably most famous for being the guy the Dodgers got instead of A-Rod, I have a question: despite being chronically injured, Dreifort gave it his all to stay in the game. Would we have been any happier with the mercenary A-Rod after he inevitably left for Texas?
Chuck Hinton CAL b. 1934, played 1968
Davey Lopes LAN b. 1945, played 1972-1981. No small irony that one of the Dodgers' best players in history shares a birthday with one of its most frequently injured. Lopes, a four-time All Star with the Dodgers, every year from 1978 through 1981, twice led the league in stolen bases. Interestingly, two of his comps are the Angels star shortstop Jim Fregosi and half-season Dodger, Phil Garner.
Roster Notes
- Aaron Sele said goodbye to his Las Vegas teammates following his last performance. The Dodgers are under a gentleman's agreement to let him go in case other opportunities arise, and is considered untradeable because of his $900,000 major league contract. The Dodgers say he has only a 20% chance of making the major league club.
- I present the following in toto:
Owner Frank McCourt visited Colletti in his press-level suite above home plate moments after Chad Tracy's grand slam against Odalis Perez tied the score, 6-6, in the fifth inning.
Tell me, Frank, is that result better or worse than with Paul DePodesta in the GM's chair? From their animated gestures, it appeared McCourt vented for several minutes, then Colletti made a few points. Eventually both men sat back in their chairs and chatted amiably for two innings before McCourt departed.
- Ricky Ledee has a torn groin muscle, and will see Frank Jobe today. His replacement, newcomer Andre Ethier, went 1-4 — a double — with a walk in yesterday's game.
- Odalis Perez's mother was hospitalized before yesterday's blowout, and with a similar ailment when he imploded in the 2004 NLDS. Grady Little was not impressed:
"He has to get (Tracy) out in that situation," Little said. "He's our starting pitcher, and he had been staked to a 6-0 lead in the fifth inning. That's the guy you have to get out. He kept firing ... but it wasn't good enough. There have been too many times this year when we have squandered five-run leads and six-run leads, and it's starting to get old."
Just now? - John Lackey may face a suspension for yesterday's melee, caused when Jason Kendall charged the mound after Lackey told him to move his elbow pads. Mike Scioscia said, "If they try and fine or suspend him, we'll send them the tapes because if he does get suspended, that would be an absolute joke. I'm dumbfounded why Kendall would charge the mound just because somebody said something to him." Lackey seemed to think the fight was a good omen:
"In 2002 spring training we got in a fight and we won the (World) Series," Lackey said. "So let's get it rolling."
